Projects
Patient Administration System for Accident and Emergency Department
This project was completed as part of the Programming II module. As a team of seven, we had to use object-orientated
programming in Java to design and implement a booking in and queueing system for incoming patients of a hospital A&E
department.
As a team we identified the main components which our application should have entailed. This included a patient database,
several GUIs, and the components I was concerned with. These were the treatment rooms, the ‘On Call Team’ and, in conjunction
with another member of the team, the queue. Our system was designed and implemented using Eclipse Luna and each component
of the system was tested using Junit and ad-hoc testing. Another role I had within the team was to read through the project
guidelines to identify all of the necessary requirements and then to ensure that the functions of our application met all of these
requirements. This resulted in the production of a fully-functional and successful system.
“Quiz for Kids” Mobile Application
This project was completed as part of the Web and Mobile Application Development module. The task was open-ended, therefore,
as a team of five, we had to concoct, design, and develop an interesting and multi-functional mobile application.
I was team leader for this project. We initially held a meeting to brainstorm ideas and agreed upon an educational application
aimed at children. The application was developed using Eclipse Juno in Java and XML languages. It held a level-based format and
quizzed children on a range of subject areas including numeracy, literacy, and geometrics. The difficulty of the questions was
based on the child’s age group. As team leader my role was focused on ensuring that all of the team members were properly
informed and motivated. I organised meeting times and places, assigned roles to team members and assessed their code while
ensuring that the work was completed before the deadline. I provided detailed documentation for the project including a full
requirements specification, user interface specification, and domain analysis. Being team leader was an enjoyable and beneficial
experience which resulted in a successful project.

Testing and Verification of “Pizza IT” Website (Java)
“EIEIO” Farming Database (SQL)
Working as a Scrum Team to Implement a Prototype GUI for recording Sprints (Java)

Skills
Problem Solving: During the MSc Software Development course, I was given problems to solve as part of a weekly practical
class in the Programming I and II modules. These problems started off as relatively simple tasks and became more complex as my
programming skills developed. Completing these tasks on a weekly basis, along with having to identify and solve problems for
each software project in the course, helped to develop my problem solving skills extensively.
Communication Skills: I have developed strong communication skills throughout my academic life. In school, I participated in
the Peer Education in Drug Awareness programme organised by the Irish Bishop’s Foundation. This included a week training in
Dromantine, presenting to first year students in St. Colman’s College and Our Lady’s School in Newry, and speaking at a
conference for the Irish Bishop’s Foundation in Maynooth. In university, my communication skills were further developed by
working on numerous team projects and having to communicate effectively with peers, tutors, and team project members through
different mediums such as e-mail, presentation, one-to-one and group meetings, and GitHub to communicate updates to
documents or code.
Team Work: From a young age I have been playing for various sports teams in Gaelic, hurling, and football, and as a result of
this I am able to work successfully as part of a team. Being a sales assistant alongside colleagues at Lidl taught me how to be
operate as a team in a working environment. Academically, I have been involved in five team-based software projects in the past
year as part of the MSc Software Development course along with a further three team-based projects for the BSc Psychology
course, all of which have been successful.
Time Management: I have displayed excellent time management skills maintaining a balance between my academics, extra-
curricular activities, and work responsibilities. I aim to achieve a high standard in every responsibility that I commit to, therefore
it is important for me to divide my time effectively between attending lectures, tutorials, researching, completing assignments,
playing Gaelic matches, and attending training sessions. Upon starting the MSc Software Development course I made the decision
to stop working as a sales assistant at Lidl in order to focus on completing the course successfully.
Project Management: As team leader of the Web and Mobile Application Development project I was able to develop my
leadership and project management skills. As previously mentioned my roles were to properly inform and motivate the team,
organise meetings, assign roles to team members, and assess code. I developed my managerial skills and was able to lead the
project and team effectively.
Interests and Hobbies
Technology: I enjoy watching and following YouTube tutorials on how to program different applications. Also, I enjoy playing
computer games on a variety of platforms and have an interest in how they are developed.
Sport: I play Gaelic for St. Michael’s GAC in Magheralin. I also play five-a-side football twice a week and play football each
summer in the Lurgan Charity League. I enjoy a variety of sports casually such as tennis, golf, bowling, pool, and snooker. Also, I
played Gaelic for Wolfe Tones GAC in Derrymacash and hurling for Sean Tracey’s GAC in Lurgan at underage level.
Music: I am currently learning to play the guitar. I also use software such as iTunes, VirtualDJ, and MixMeister Fusion to create
mixed playlists and CDs.
