Attention Fellow Associates:
This document is to certify that an employee of Illumina named Jonathan Lang worked for me as
an Electrical Mechanical Technician for a period of one year from 2003 – 2004. While he was
here he successfully completed several complex projects for us. His primary accomplishment
was the assembly of two in-house production machines known as S-4 Synthesizers. These
automated machines are designed for the production of synthetic DNA. This DNA is then used
by chemists and scientists for bioscience research application worldwide.
Jonathan also completed retrofit builds on seven ‘Oligo’ production machines which also
produce DNA material for research purposes. This equipment consists of PLC, electrical,
mechanical, pneumatic, and hydraulic fluid control components to mix, heat, and deliver a
variety of chemicals in precise amounts to produce the DNA material.
In addition, Jonathan assembled the Automated DNA Dispenser project. This machine utilizes
pumps, fluid controls, and micro controllers to accurately dispense Illumina’s DNA product into
96 vials simultaneously for timely and efficient delivery to our customers. This project was
completed entirely with the resourceful use of in-house materials.
Jonathan’s final project for Illumina was the Peptide Synthesizer for Dr. Michal Lebl. This
project consisted of a reconfigured safety work cell where peptide research can be conducted
utilizing modified microwave equipment and automated test fixtures. This project required
considerable manufacturing fabrication skill and was assembled with available in-house material.
During his time at Illumina, Jonathan demonstrated a wide range of skills and expertise. He
demonstrated a high level of technical proficiency and made a fine contribution to our
organization. He is a very hard worker with an exemplary attitude. I was very impressed by his
ability to take an idea and develop it into a functioning manifestation of our original concept.
Jonathan will make an excellent addition to any organization requiring a skilled technician with
extensive experience assembling equipment. We thank him very much for his efforts.
