1. Do Rights of Passage Inspire You?
Going through different phases in life is something that every human being does and that is probably
the most difficult thing in life. If Darwin’s theory of human beings being the sons of apes is to be
believed then we have come to these steel and brick constructed houses after going through several
rites of passages. Our ancestors would have looked quite different compared to us in structure and so
would have been the case with our living conditions. They lived in caves and fed on fruits, leaves, stems
and the animals that they hunted while we are living in the era of canned food and hamburgers.
But does it not entice us all to relive the life that our forefathers lived centuries ago? It inspires me at
least and I would love to spend some time in a cave waiting for the right
time to go out when I can avoid the predators, hunt
for the animals that taste best for me and
then keep trying for hours to light the
fire in the cave so that I am
able to keep myself warm.
Then I would also want to
cook that food on the fire
lit with the help of stones
as I would have developed
a taste for cooked meat.
Looking for something that can
be used as a bowl in which I can
cook that meat also interests me because
it was this necessity that gave birth to the need of
making tools.
It inspires me to cut the wood through those tools and then let others know of my invention through
drawing the diagrams on the walls of my cave. Growing a family, making a tribe and then start eating
each other up would not be possible however because I certainly don’t have to go through the
transitional phases that my ancestors had to go but realizing that eating each other up is no solution and
that I have to find other ways of feeding my tribe and begin to cultivate vegetables and fruits is certainly
a phenomenon that pulls me towards it.
It is not possible to go through all those phases because our ancestors certainly did not go through them
in one lifetime but we can try going out into the forests and on these wilderness trips we may come
across several realizations that can change our lives forever. We may start taking life in a different
manner and start living a life that is not driven by material needs, lust for luxury and always trying to
work harder to fulfill these unnecessary needs and wants. We may start leading a simple causal life in
which only the necessities are wants and only the basic needs are must. Doesn’t it entice you? I know it
does.
