1. Día de muertos en Janitzio
Desde antes de la llegada de los españoles los mexicanos rendían culto a la muerte. Para
éstos, la muerte era una liberación y no le temían. Esta tradición se sigue manifestando en las
calaveras literarias que ridiculizan a los familiares y amigos que están vivos, y hacen burla al
describir su forma de actuar y lo que les sucederá en el otro mundo.
Los habitantes de Janitizio participan en un rito tradicional que es un deber sagrado, el cual
honra por igual a vivos y muertos. Mujeres y niños de la isla llegan al panteón y se dirigen hacia
las tumbas de sus antepasados bajo un silencio que contrasta con la luz de las velas, mientras
colocan los alimentos predilectos de sus difuntos
La noche de primero de noviembre los tarascos celebran el "terúscan" (rapiña organizada con
permiso de las autoridades), un juego ritual en el que un prioste (guía que es nombrado el 19
de marzo y se encarga de coordinar las celebraciones) acompaña a los jóvenes del poblado a
tomar a escondidas las mazorcas de maíz, calabazas y flores que se encuentran en los
sembradíos y techos de las casas. Mientras, los ancianos esperan en el atrio de la iglesia o en
la Huatapera para comer lo recolectado y distribuirlo entre todos para realizar un convivio. Al
día siguiente se recoge la Ofrenda de los Frutos de la Cosecha (Camperi) solicitando en voz
alta "¡Camperi, Camperi, Camperi!" y se entrega lo obtenido al sacerdote, quien dice los
responsos en el templo esa misma tarde.
Aunque las particularidades de esta tradición varían en las distintas regiones, siempre está
acompañada de alegría, recuerdos, danza, cantos, plegarias, juegos y comida, con lo cual la
muerte se torna un hecho inolvidable pero no temible
CARACTERISTICAS DE UNA OFRENDA MEXICANA
• Papel picado de color morado (significa luto cristiano)

• Flores de cempazuchil (del nahuatl: cempoalxochitl = flor de 20 o más pétalos.
• Cuatro velas que indican los cuatro puntos cardinales
• Incienso para alejar a los malos espíritus y para purificar el ambiente.
• Cruz de ceniza para purificar el espíritu del muerto.
• Jarra de agua para cuando llegue fatigado del camino.
• Recipiente para lavarse las manos y toalla.
• Foto del difunto.
• Comida que le gusta al muerto
• Pertenencias queridas del muerto.
• Tequila, agua o la bebida preferida del muerto.
• Cuatro banderas de papel picado metidas en naranjas
