Fried Egg Jellyfish

   BY: JOE CHANDLER
Phacellophora camtschatica

 My species of jellyfish is known as the egg yolk
jellyfish. They can be found in the Pacific Ocean
between the Gulf of Alaska and Chile. It’s tentacles
are between 10 and 20 feet long when full grown.
They mostly eat other jellyfish and plankton.
Egg Yolk Jellyfish Classification

 This is its classification of my organism.

                 Kingdom: Animalia (animals)
                 Phylum: Cnidaria (cnidarians)
              Subphylum: Medusozoa (medusa)
 Class: Scyphozoa (jellyfish with a certain cap shape and size)
 Order: Semaeostomeae (jellyfish with oral arms)
                   Family: Phacellophoridae
                    Genus: Phacellophora
 Species: P. camtschatica (egg yolk jellyfish)
Response

 An adaption that the fried egg jellyfish has made is
that it can sting its prey. The fried egg jellyfish
doesn’t have a very powerful sting so most prey is
killed by a combination of being stung and getting
tangled in the thick tentacles then being eaten.
Fried Egg Jellyfish

 Most jellyfish have two stages in life. The first is
spent as a sessile polyp. The second is spent as a
medusa or jellyfish. This occurs when the sessile
polyp pinches off the medusa. (Budding)
Reproduction

 As in many jellyfish, the egg yolk jelly reproduces
with male and female medusa. The male carry sperm
and release it into the ocean. The females carry their
egg either in their mouth or stomach.
Reproduction and Growth

 If the sperm and egg come in contact the egg is
fertilized and the mommy carries the egg in brooding
pouches on her oral arms. Eventually thee egg is
released and finds a hard surface to latch onto and
 grows into a polyp.
Organization

 The egg yolk jellyfish is organized by its oral arms
and tentacles. They are set up in a way that if an
animal swims into it’s tentacles, it will get trapped
 and be eaten.
Contrast

 Compared to other jellies, the egg yolk jellyfish has a
very mild sting. Also the yellow tissue inside the cap
is not seen often in other jellyfish. The yellow “yolk”
is gonad tissue used for reproduction. It also has
pretty long tentacles compared to other species.
Comparison

 Some things it has in common with other jellyfish is
that it starts out as a polyp and then buds off. Also it
stings its prey when capturing it like other jellyfish.
Lastly like many other jellyfish, the egg yolk eats
 other jellyfish and plankton.
