MADISON (AP) — Wis-
consin election officials say
Waukesha County’s vote
totals in the
state Supreme
Court election
appear to
match totals
from the
county’s mu-
nicipalities.
The
Government
Account-
ability Board
reviewed the county’s totals
after Clerk Kathy Nicko-
laus announced she failed
to report 14,000 votes from
the city of Brookfield. The
new votes gave incumbent
Justice David Prosser the
lead over challenger JoAnne
Kloppenburg.
The board’s report says
investigators didn’t find
any major discrepancies
between the county’s final
vote total and municipali-
ties’ vote totals. They did
find one vote for Prosser
and two write-in votes for
Kloppenburg that weren’t
included in the county’s
final tally. Investigators say
there was no explanation for
the anomalies.
A more thorough review
of Nickolaus’ procedures
is expected to be com-
pleted within the next two
months.

MADISON (AP) — Outside
groups spent $4.5 million in
the two months leading up to
this spring’s state Supreme
Court election, according to
a new study a government
watchdog group released
Tuesday.
The Wisconsin Democracy
Campaign’s report notes
about $2.7 million went to
support incumbent Justice
David Prosser, with about
$1.1 million coming from
Wisconsin Manufacturers
& Commerce, the state’s larg-
est business group.
The remaining $1.8 million
went to support Prosser’s
challenger, state attorney
JoAnne Kloppenburg.
Almost all of that money
came from the liberal group
Greater Wisconsin Commit-
tee.
Much of the spending
went for television ads.
Outside groups spent a
record $3.58 million on them,
according to the Brennan
Center for Justice.
The Wisconsin Democ-
racy Campaign’s report said
spending by outside groups
and the four candidates
initially in the race totaled
$5.4 million.

Dems file petition
to recall Harsdorf
MADISON (AP) — Wis-
consin Democrats filed a
petition Tuesday to recall
a fourth GOP state senator
for her vote to curtail col-
lective bargaining rights
for public employees.
Nan Lambert, a volun-
teer for the committee to
recall Sen. Sheila Harsdorf
of River Falls, filed more
than 23,000 signatures
with the Government Ac-
countability Board.
If at least 15,744 signa-
tures are valid, the board
would certify the petition.
A recall election would be
held six weeks after the
date of certification. The
board is expected to ask a
court for an extension of
its 31-day review period.
