- Silk-screening, is a printing technique that uses a porous mesh screen that has an ink blocking stencil transferred onto it. - For my application component I decided to make a silk-screening company of my own. The company is named APJ silk-screening and designs
- Silk-screening and Design go hand and hand. All Design’s consist of line, shape, direction, size, texture, color and value. When Silk-screening the main elements of design that you use are line, shape, size and color. In order to design anything to be silk-screened you need to know the size and shape of the product in order to design a size and shape to fit the product. - Silk-screening first emerged in the Japanese sung dynasty. Then moving west in 1907 in England it was first patent by Samuel Simon who created the fist press system. In 1914 silk-screening developed in America when a second patent was issued for John Pilsworth multi-color silk-screening pres. - Ink is used for the printing onto material. Emulsion is used for blocking the ink and creating space to let the ink through. Tracing paper is used to transfer designs onto screens with an exposure unit. Tape is used for the sides of the screen that have not been covered with emulsion. Ink or emulsion usually does not come off by water, specific cleaning supplies are used to clean screens. Because the silk-screening process is so messy an apron is usually worn.Bross, Steve. - A screen is what the design of the product is printed on. Squeegee’s are used to transfer ink to material. Because A conveyor Dryer is used to dry Ink and Flash Dryers are for more the one color jobs. A press like in the picture above is the unit that all material is printed on. Press system’s can range form a couple hundred dollars to thousands of dollars. A pressure washer is used to remove stenciling from the screen and an air dryer is used to dry the screen. - Software is very important, it is what you create the Design in. There are all types of Application’s for you to design a silk-screened product in. The work area should a cool because of the heat machines used, and it is easy for your work space to become unbearable because of the heat and movement. - Most exposure units are used to burn through the screens. Most Exposure units have set timers for 2 minutes of lighting to burn through the screens. They are also like an updated versions of how photography was developed in the past. This works by the light hitting a stencil.
