April 29-30, 2010
The 2010 Sara Schuh Child Abuse Conference will be held on April 29, 2010 from 8:30 am to
4:15 pm at the Mount Pleasant Presbyterian Church at 302 Hibben Street Mt. Pleasant, SC
29464 and April 30, 2010 from 8:00 am to 11:15 am at MUSC Storm Eye Institute Auditorium,
Room 809 located at 171 Ashley Avenue Charleston, SC 29403.
This second annual conference is designed to facilitate new understanding and upgrade profes-
sional practice in the prevention, recognition/diagnosis, and management of child abuse. Par-
ticipants are encouraged to attend any presentation of interest and will receive CEU, CME of
CLE credits as designated. The presenters represent many fields with child abuse expertise
recognized locally, regionally or nationally.
We are honored to name this annual conference for Dr. Sara Schuh, the MUSC Pediatrician
who is a pioneer in the field of child abuse pediatrics. She continues to this day to promote
clinical excellence and inter-disciplinary care to children affected by concerns of child abuse
and neglect.

fessional Society on the Abuse of Children, Medical University of South Carolina/College of
Nursing, and The Dee Norton Lowcountry Children’s Center.

for the 2nd Annual Sara Schuh Child Abuse Conference.
The participants will be able to do the following:
Identify the major public health problems that are substantially increased by
child maltreatment and/or family violence
Explain changes in SC law concerning other acts not charged in child abuse
prosecutions and know how this is used in court
Be able to recognize abusive abdominal trauma and to name both short and
long term consequences
Describe a protocol for the non-medical assessment of sexual abuse in chil-
dren ages 18-36 months of age and be able to implement this into your prac-
tice
Describe the increased risk to offspring of mothers with a childhood history of
sexual abuse
Recognize 3 patterns of bruising suggestive of non-accidental trauma
