Everybody loves Raymond
Show
                    Backround
Everybody loves Raymond is a
show on TBS about a n Italian-
American Sportswriter “Ray
Borone” who is played by Ray
Romano. In the show ray is
very whinny and barley keeps
any situation serious. He
always has a joke and rarely
takes responsibility.

His wife Debra played by
Patricia Heaton is a housewife
in the show, she takes care of
the kids, cleans the house and
does all the chores. Debra is a
hard working women who often
feels like she is under-
appreciated
Show Back round Cont.
Marie who is played by
Doris Roberts is also a
house wife married to frank
(rays Parents). Marie is
described in the show as
Intrusive, controlling,
manipulative and over-
nurturing. This is mostly
seen in her actions to
Raymond.

Frank played by Peter
Boyle is a stubborn
masculine personality. He
always is grumpy and
telling people how it is.
Raymond’s
brother Robert
played by Brad
Garrett. In the
show Robert is
a police officer
for the NYPD. In
the show he
always in
envious of ray
and seems to
think ray is the
“favorite”
Types of
  Currency
Ray and Debra have different Types of
Currencies. This is one of the bigger
problem in the sitcom because Debra
uses Food, service (like making coffee,
and carting the kids around everywhere).

While ray on the other hand shows it by
non verbal Affect(such as smiling when
Debra enters the room.) and also by
doing small favors for Debra

“when Meanings are shared, rewards are
experienced; when meanings are
missed, costs are experienced”.(pg.122)

In this show meanings are defiantly
missed and Debra feels under
appreciated a lot of the time. This is
usually how conflict begins.
Family Roles
In this show the roles of the family is just like the Stereotypical
family. The father (Ray) is the working provider for the family while
the Mother (Debra) is the stay at home mom that cleans and takes
care of the kids.
Patterns of family Conflict
“Couples develop their
own styles of conflict,
which were unique to
them.”(pg.218). This is
apparent in how Ray
and Debra fight. Debra
gets very emotional
and ray being the non
serious type still jokes
around even when
Debra is mad.
Narrative
Frank is the main
Narrator for the family.
He is a “manly man” and
a Korean war vet. He is
always the person telling
old war stories and also
letting his two sons
(although they don’t want
to hear it) how hard life
was “back then”.
Relational Maintenance
Relational
maintenance has
five strategies:

Positivity
Openness
Assurances
Social Networks
Sharing Tasks
The Power in the family Power
comes from Marie. She is
the dominant one in the
family that keeps
everything in order she
cooks family meals and
on holidays makes sure
everything is going as
planned.

Even Though Frank is a
stern man, he often
openly admits that “your
mother does what she
wants” and also said “you
try and stop her” this is
clear evidence Marie has
the power
