Press kit / media kit for Jennifer Richards Art and her "SoCal Muse" collection of oil paintings, on exhibit at the Encinitas 101 Mainstreet Association Gallery February 15 - March 30, 2014.
SoCal Muse is a collection of oil paintings created by California artist Jennifer Richards and inspired by the landscape, vegetation and lifestyle of Southern California. “I love to paint the peaceful, unique and interesting subjects that draw so many of us to Southern California. This region is my muse.”
A native of Northern Virginia, Jennifer Richards took a detour to Fairbanks, Alaska before settling in San Diego County in 1997. Her work does not ignite political commentary, challenge the human condition, or provoke deep inward existentialist examination. It’s not complicated or philosophical. Rather, there is simplicity and an ever-present serenity in her work, a counter-balance to the hurried hamster-wheel of 21st century life.
SoCal Muse contains reproductions of the following oil paintings, all created in 2013 by Jennifer Richards: Welcome to Encinitas, Paraglider over Torrey Pines, Motorcycle and the orange grove, Windmills in the desert, Lavender pasture, Yosemite Valley View, Batiquitos Lagoon, Sunset surfer at Swami's reef, Fisherman's perch beach cottage at Crystal Cove, Yellow surfboard, Point Loma, Surf lesson, Sandpipers at the beach, Pregnant apple, Apples and metal cup, Tarnished silver bowl and oranges, Blue bottle and lemons, Orange slices, Avocado, Lavender farm, Blue bottle and lavender, and Bird of paradise.
Jennifer Richards lives and paints in the beautiful coastal town of Encinitas, California.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Welcome to Encinitas
2013, oil on panel, 13 3/8” x 24”
Jennifer Richards does not create art for political commentary,
to challenge the human condition, or to provoke deep inward
existentialist examination. It’s not complicated or philosophical.
Rather, there is simplicity and an ever-present serenity in her
work, a counter-balance to the hurried hamster-wheel of 21st
century life.!

As a child in the mid-Atlantic region of the east coast, Jennifer
Richards never dreamt of becoming an artist. She channelled
her creative side into playing viola, experimenting in the
darkroom with her grandfather's old SLR camera, and sewing
her own clothing. Her passion in high school for all things
scientific opened the door to after-school employment in a
biotech lab, and in college and graduate school she studied
geography and the global diversity of land, resources, and
cultures-- themes that would resurface many years later in her
art. !

A craving for adventure and independence lead Jennifer to
Fairbanks, Alaska at age 20 where she spent four life-changing
years living in a rustic, dry cabin. She was captivated by the
beauty of the subarctic landscape and felt quite at home among
the unique characters and culture of the region. While in
Alaska, the relationship between visual perception and
emotional wellbeing became firmly cemented in her
consciousness. “I remember lying in the snow to watch the
northern lights dance across the sky. Despite the bitter cold, I
couldn't imagine a more peaceful place.”!

In search of a little more sunshine, Jennifer and her Alaska
sweetheart moved to Southern California in 1997 and chose
Encinitas in 2002 when they were ready to start a family.

After a decade of unsatisfying results, Jennifer began formal art
instruction with Albert Martin in 2012 and literally went back to
the drawing board to learn foundational skills of the old
masters. Within a year she was ready to emerge from the
studio and present her work in public. In 2013 her paintings
were juried into shows at the Museum of the Living Artist in San
Diego’s Balboa Park, and she won her first award at the San
Diego Fine Art Exhibition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds and
Racetrack. The Off Track Gallery in Encinitas, CA began
showing and selling her work, and in 2014 the Encinitas 101
Mainstreet Association invited her to present her first solo
show, SoCal Muse.
