The History of Gymnastics
Gymnos, in Greek, means naked, so gymnastics means
exercising naked.
When they held the olympics women were not allowed to
attend. If they were caught there they would be thrown off
a cliff.
The father of gymnastics is Frederick Ludwig Jahn. He
opened the first modern gymnasium in 1811.

The Events of Gymnastics for
Women:
Uneven bars-two bars where one is 7.5 feet off of the ground and
one is 5 feet off of the ground.
Vault ,used in both women and men-sometimes called the
“horse’’ is 47 inches tall. You run onto a reuther board, a board
with thick springs inside, then jump up and push off the “horse”.
Balance beam-16 feet long, 4 feet off the ground, and 4 inches
wide.
Floor exercise, used in both women and men- a combination of
ballet, modern dance, and tumbling.
The Vault The Uneven Bars
The Events of Gymnastics for Men:
Parallel Bars-Bars 67 inches off the floor, 11.5 feet long, and
17-19 inches apart.
Horizontal Bar-A bar 94.5 inches long and about 100
inches above the ground.
Pommel horse- A vaulting horse with two adjustable, 4
inch high U-shaped handles about 1 foot, 5 inches apart.
Rings-Rings that are 7 inches in diameter that hang about
100 feet above the mats.

Forms of Gymnastics:
Rhythmic Gymnastics-A routine done by women using
a rope, hoop, ball, club, or ribbon, with music.
Acrobatics- A performance that involves great
strength and balance.
Trampoline- A springboard that flings a person up in
the air.
Acrobatics Rhythmic Gymnastics
Judging and Scoring
In a competition, each gymnast performs a freestyle
event and is watched by four to six judges, who are
former top gymnasts themselves. Then each judge
gives a score. The highest and lowest scores are
averaged to calculate the score for that routine.
Competitions
There are 3 different competitions in a meet:
1.The team championship-Each teams 5 best scores are totaled
and the team with the most points wins the gold medal.
2.The individual all around championship- The top 36 top
gymnasts each perform one at a time to determine the best all
around gymnast.
3.The individual apparatus championship-The six highest
scoring gymnasts, at the end of the team competition perform
one at a time. The scores are added to the previous ones and
the gymnasts with the highest total wins.
The Staircase Effect
The staircase effect means that gymnasts who go first
receive lower scores than the gymnasts that go last.
This is because the judges want to leave a little room at
the top to reward a truly spectacular performance.
For example, if the first gymnast gets a 10.0 then the
judges wont have a higher score for someone who does
even better.
Keeping Up Appearances
Looks count in gymnastics. No one will have purple hair or
wild clothes. Gymnasts make sure they are neat, clean, and
wear nothing that calls attention to itself.
Gymnasts wont have long hair, girls might wear a little bit
of makeup, and girls wear simple leotards. Boys wear shorts
for floor exercises and long white pants for other events.
Is it worth it?
There is a lot of trouble in the gymnastics world
including, eating disorders, crippling injuries, pain
killers, and diet pills. Also there are abusive coaches,
obsessed parents, young woman who grow up without
a childhood, suicide attempts, and death.
The End!
