Social media allows for a two-way exchange of information across platforms like social networking sites and video sharing sites, and is used to connect with others who share similar interests, values, or relationships. Popular social networking sites include Facebook with over 200 million active users and over 100 million daily users, and YouTube which has over 300 million viewers worldwide and sees ten hours of new video uploaded every minute. Twitter also has approximately 21.9 million US users.

- Social media is something interactive created in cyberspace that is a gathering point for people with similar interests. Sometimes that center point is the media itself, an article, a blog, a video, etc. Where you are part of a larger group gathered around some type of media.
- Other times, there are sites that the focal point of the gathering is YOU. These sites are better known as social networking, be it for personal or professional use, the only reason these people are here is because they know you. Some may of course also have connections with each other.
- Upload images from all kinds of county wide events. Create sets with descriptions for and entire event or individual image. View those sets as slideshows.
- Free blog website. A blog is a web log, like an online journal. Used to share information that others may find interesting. Meant as an informal way of sharing news. - Combines all aspects of social networking in one place. Information sharing, photos, video, events and much more. The CDC was one of the first to use Facebook successfully in the public health arena. Once a profile is created, then you can create a page for an organization. Fan vs Friend. Profile has friends, page has fans. Pages are open to all so no appoval is required for a page. Explain different tabs and what aps are and go through approvals. All blog posts are automatically updated via an ap. All information is shared with every other friend on your profile. Try to keep business and personal separate. Careful with aps, there can be viruses attached to them.
- One of the fastest growing social networking site on the internet. Combines web information sharing with text. Show who following and followers. Can update from web or phone, perform real time update on phone. Give example of recent tornado incident. People where uploading twitpics via cell phone before the local weather service had time to issue an alert. Emphasize that these messages are not private! Show global twittervision.
- Dashboard for collecting all the different social networking and social media sites we use in one place. Go over each ap, emphasize the calendar by saying we can place anything health related on it that we would like to share.
- Feeling overwhelmed – don’t worry about all of these, they are mostly place holders that point them to our website. The point is to utilize the ones most frequented by our community and get our message out with those. Now let me show you something that will really blow your mind!
