International research and education collaboration by the
Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center (ARC)
The Laboratory of Aquaculture & Artemia Reference Center
has a long-standing reputation in development cooperation.
Over the past 30 years we have led and participated in
numerous projects in over 20 countries. Our projects focus
on brine shrimp and its applications in aquaculture and in
integrated salt production units, and on improved larval
culture of tropical fish, shrimp and shellfish species of local
interest.
We run/ran projects funded by UNDP-FAO, UNIDO, UN-
Mekong, SEAFDEC, Belgian government (ABOS,
BELSPO), Flemish government (VLIR, VVOB, Ministry of
Education), EU (STD, INCO, local national projects), local
governments, in Latin America (Peru, Ecuador and Chile),
Africa (Tunisia, Egypt, Kenya and South Africa) and Asia
(Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, China and
Iran).
Our cooperation remains foremost demand-driven but the
paradigm gradually shifted from pure knowledge transfer to
collaborative efforts in a spirit of equal partnership.
is the controlled production of aquatic
organisms such as fish, crustaceans, shellfish
and algae. For the past decades it has been
and is the fastest growing bio-industry. Due to
overfishing, meeting the growing demand for
healthy, safe and tasty seafood will largely
depend from aquaculture. Already now, about
half of the roughly150 million ton of consumed
aquatic organisms was produced through
aquaculture. Predictions are that by 2030
more than 75 % of our seafood will be
produced through aquaculture.
