The document discusses web-based decision support systems (DSS). It outlines the tasks of conventional DSS and how the internet and web enable new approaches. A web-based DSS delivers decision support tools over the internet while a web-enabled DSS incorporates web technologies. Recent research focuses on architectures, technologies, and applications like a hospital management system and e-commerce risk analysis tool. Benefits include increased availability while challenges involve technological issues adapting DSS for the web and economic questions around new payment models.

3. Conventional Decision Support
System (DSS)
• Current DSS facilitate a wide variety of decision
tasks:
Information Gathering and Analysis
Model Building
Sensitivity Analysis
Alternative Evaluation
Decision Implementation

4. Why Internet & World Wide Web?
• The global internet is now enabling technologies
for delivering computerized decision support
systems.
• There are many on-going efforts to develop and
implement Web-Based DSS in various areas such
as:
Health Care.
Private Companies.
Governments.
Education.

5. Web-based Decision Support
System
• Delivering decision support information or tool to
manager or business analyst.
• The computer that is hosting DSS application is
linked to user’s computer via computer networks
with TCP/IP.
6. Web-based Decision Support
System
• Main Terms:
Web-Based
The entire application is implemented using web
technologies.
Web-Enabled
key part of an application like a database remain on a
legacy system, but the application can be accessed from
a web-based component and displayed in a browser.

7. Web-based Decision Support
System
• Approaches used to deliver Web-Based DSS:
Data Driven Approach
Which helps managers to {Organize, Retrieve, Analysis}
large volume of relevant data using database and OLAP
techniques.
Model Driven Approach
Formal representations of decision model and provide
analytical support using the tools of decisions such as:
- Decision Analysis.
- Decision Simulation.
- Decision Statistics.

8. Decision Technology As A Service
• Web technologies can be classified as:
Facilitate platform
independent and universal Allow more capabilities to
access to decision support be embedded in the user
application interface
Relevant Technologies Relevant Technologies
JAVA Application JAVA Applets
Server Side Scripting Lang. Active X Controls
PHP & JAVA Server Pages Browser Plug-ins

9. Recent Research in Web-based
DSS
• Researches in this area concentrate on two point
of views:

10. Recent Research in Web-based DSS-
Architecture & Technologies (1)
Idea & Concentration
DSS meta data model for distributing decision support
system on the web.
EXPLANATION
The ability to find appropriate resources on the web and
determine their situation ability.
Meta data helps end users to locate and understand a
specific DSS capability on the web.
Jasour A.Obeidat – Middle East University, Jan.2013
11. Recent Research in Web-based DSS-
Architecture & Technologies (2)
. Idea & Concentration
Investigate customers satisfaction with web-based decision
support system
EXPLANATION
Proposing three independent variables:
-System Quality {Ease of use, convenience of access}.
- Information Quality {Relevance, Accuracy,
Completeness, Timeliness}.
-Information Presentation.
As a results: System quality and information quality are
correlated to end users satisfaction.
Information representation : did not have a statistically
significant impact on an end users.

12. Recent Research in Web-based DSS-
Application and Implementation(1)
.
Application
Web Based DSS for Hospital Management.
Implementation
It is a customer relationship management system for
physician relationship management , called physician
profiling system

13. Recent Research in Web-based DSS-
Application and Implementation(2)
.
Application
Web-based DSS that used a model based on fuzzy set
theory to perform risk analysis for e-commerce
development
Implementation
In Prototype:
- Web browser : Used as Interface component.
- Database / DSS Models : Hosted at Servers.
Prototype Usage:
- Helps managers to { identify , Analyze , Prioritize} risks.
Jasour A.Obeidat – Middle East University, Jan.2013
14. Recent Research in Web-based DSS-
Application and Implementation(3)
. Application
Web-based DSS framework for portfolio selection.
Implementation
Uses Online Analytical Processing OLAP and Parallel
Virtual Machine PVM.
In Prototype:
-Enables multiple computers to handle a large-scale
decision support problems .
Performance: IMPROVED !!!
- By using multiple user interfaces (i.e. Web browser)
accessing database hosted over servers and analyzed
based on DSS models hosted too.

15. Benefits of Web-based DSS
The benefits of building web-based decision support
system are :
Increasing the availability.
Growing sophistication of web technologies.
Providing remote controlling.
Distributed computations.
Exchange of complex multimedia information.
16. Challenges faces Web-based DSS
Technological Challenges :
The basic web architectural model designed for random
jumps in hyperspace, without providing a persistent
connection or state. But DSS generally needs repeated
interactions with a model and exchange a large amount
of data speared across interactions.
Economical Challenges:
To offer decision support as a service, providers must
experiment the new payments methods.
Social and behavioral challenge:
The type of users by applying Web-based DSS casual
users , where , the previous users were professionals.
