Lighthouse Park is one of Greater Vancouver's most beautiful parks located along the shores of West Vancouver. The park boasts some of the largest Douglas Fir trees in Greater Vancouver as well as breathtaking views of the water. There are a variety of trails through the park that take you past old growth Western Red Cedar and Douglas Fir trees. The trails are all fairly easy with only a few having a short hill to ascend or descend. Take a look at the park map at the trailhead and plan your route so that you do a circle through the park and end at the lighthouse. For those who just want a short walk down towards the lighthouse, follow the wide trail for about 10 minutes. To the right of the picnic tables, a path leads up onto a rocky outcrop giving a view of the lighthouse just over the tree line. Another picturesque location is at Starboat Cove. It's a short 15-minute walk east from the lighthouse where there is a sign for a steep path that takes you down to the beach area. The lighthouse on Destruction Island can be viewed from turnouts along Highway 101 in Olympic National Park. Highway 101 hugs the Pacific Ocean for about twelve miles through Olympic National Park from Queets to Ruby Beach. From there you can get a view of the lighthouse at the end of the spit across Dungeness Bay.Point Wilson Lighthouse*****Directions: Located two miles north of Port Townsend in Fort Worden State Park. From Highway 20 in Port Townsend, turn left on Kearney Street and when it ends turn right onto Blaine Street. From Blaine Street, turn left onto Walker Street, which will become Cherry Street. Follow Cherry Street 1.6 miles to Fort Worden where the road changes to Fort Worden Way. Enter Fort Worden and turn right on Eisenhower Avenue. When Eisenhower Avenue ends, turn left on Harbor Defense Way and follow it 0.8 miles to the Point Wilson Lighthouse. This drab looking hill was the scene of important scientific studies in the 1920’s and 1990’s. Thousands of leaf fossils found here helped give us our first glimpse of an ancient ecosystem 33 million years in age. Vanaf de parkeerplaats loop je over een houten boardwalk langs het basin en langs de kust van Yellowstone Lake. West Thumb Geyser Basin is een van de kleinste geiser basins in het park, maar de ligging ervan, direct naast Yellowstone Lake, is ontzettend mooi. Enkele van de mooiste bezienswaardigheden hier zijn de symmetrische gevormde Fishing Cone, de diepe en kleurrijke Abyss Pool, en de Thumb Paint Pots, die constant modderkegels bouwen. De andere geisers in dit basin heten: Twin Geysers, Black Pool, Lakeshore Geyser, Blue Funnel Spring en Surging Spring.Yellowstone Lake Overlook Trail. Startpunt parkeerplaats, lengte 3km, 120m. Klim op het einde! Het wandelpad ligt aan het begin van de West Thumb Geyser Basin parkeerplaatsnen gaat grotendeels over vrij vlak terrein, behalve het laatste gedeelte vóór het uitkijkpunt: een redelijk pittige klim van 120 meter maken. Je komt uit bij een bergweide met een indrukwekkend uitzicht over West Thumb, Yellowstone Lake en de Absaroka Mountains.Van West Thumb naar South Entrance (van noord naar zuid):Lewis Falls** (langs de weg, goed te fotograferen vanaf de brug)Moose Falls **(vlak voor de park entrance, korte wandeling vanaf parkeerplaats)Van West Thumb naar Old Faithful:Shoshone PointIsa LakeKepler Cascades *** (vlakbij Upper Geyser Basin vanaf platform, serie watervallen en stroomversnellingen in Firehole River)Lone Star Geyser Trail. Startpung vlabij parkeerplaats Kepler Cascades, lengte 8km, weinig hoogteverschillen. Dit is een eenvoudige wandeling die deels over een oude weg naast de Firehole River gaat. Ook fietsers mogen gebruik maken van deze weg, behalve tijdens het laatste stuk dat naar de Lone Star Geyser gaat. De geiser zelf is kegelvormig, en is 3,5 meter hoog. Vaak is er eerst een kleine eruptie, die ongeveer een half uur later wordt gevolgd door een indrukwekkende uitbarsting van zo’n 13 meter hoog, die soms wel een half uur aanhoudt. Deze grote uitbarstingen komen ongeveer een keer per drie uur voor.Old Faithful met Upper Geyser Basin:De Upper Geyser Basin beslaat een gebied van 5 km², en bevat bijna een kwart van alle geisers in de wereld; een grotere concentratie is nergens anders te vinden. De voetpaden die hier nabij de thermische bezienswaardigheden zijn aangelegd, hebben een totale lengte van 11 kilometer. En net buiten de Upper Geyser Basin liggen nog diverse wandelpaden die naar in de buurt gelegen watervallen, meertjes ed. gaan. In het Visitor Center hangt naast de balie een bord waarop wordt aangegeven binnen welke tijden de zes meest betrouwbare geisers waarschijnlijk uit zullen barsten. Dit wordt aangegeven door een tijdstip met daarbij een marge, die zowel vóór als ná het genoemde tijdstip geldt. Dus als er staat “Grand Geyser – 3.00 pm – within 2 hours”, dan betekent dat dat Grand Geyser waarschijnlijk uit zal barsten tussen 1 uur en 5 uur ’s middags. De zes geisers die op dit bord worden vermeld zijn: Old Faithful, Grand Geyser, Daisy Geyser, Riverside Geyser, Castle Geyser en Great Fountain Geyser. De eerste vijf liggen in het Upper Geyser Basin, Great Fountain Geyser ligt wat verder naar het noorden aan de Firehole Lake Drive. Op de balie liggen briefjes waarop je de genoemde tijden kunt overschrijven. Houd er rekening mee dat de loopafstanden in het basin vrij groot zijn, zo ligt bijvoorbeeld Riverside Geyser op ongeveer 2 kilometer afstand van het Visitor Center. Met behulp van de genoemde tijden en de plattegrond kan je proberen je bezoek aan de Upper Geyser Basin zodanig in te delen, dat je de uitbarsting van twee of drie geisers mee kunt maken. De Upper Geyser Basin wordt verdeeld in een zuidelijk en een noordelijk gedeelte.Zuidelijk deel Upper Geyser Basin:Old Faithful GeyserOld Faithful heeft z’n naam in 1870 gekregen omdat de erupties steeds precies op tijd gebeurden. De gemiddelde tijd tussen de erupties is in de loop van de tijd wel iets langer geworden, als gevolg van aardbevingen en vandalisme, maar toch is het nog steeds een zeer betrouwbare geiser. De erupties vinden gemiddeld 1x per 91 minuten plaats. Elke uitbarsting duurt 1,5 tot 5 minuten; er wordt dan 14.000 tot 32.000 liter kokend water omhooggespoten tot een hoogte die varieert van 30 tot 55 meter.Anemone Geyser Van alle geisers is dit, zover je daarvan kan spreken, de quot;
liefstequot;
geiser. De Amerikanen zouden hem omschrijven met het woordje 'cute'. De Anemone Geyser is een heen klein geisertje dat prachtig het hele eruptie-proces van een geiser weergeeft. Hij barst om de zeven minuten uit. Eerst zie je het water de kegel van de geiser vullen, waarna het water over de rand stroomt. Dan pruttelt en sputtert het geisertje gedurende zo'n 2 à 3 minuten, waarbij het water zo'n 1 à 3 meter omhoog spuit. Vervolgens eindigt de eruptie weer en stroomt het water terug in de kegel van de geiser, waarbij je een quot;
familair gurgling soundquot;
hoort.Plume GeyserBij deze geiser kan je elke 20 tot 40 minuten 3 tot 5 korte uitbarstingen zien, waarbij het water ongeveer 8 meter hoog komt. Dit is een vrij jonge geiser, die ontstaan is door een stoomexplosie in 1922. Plume Geyser ligt dicht bij de boardwalk, zodat je de erupties goed van dichtbij kan bekijken.Beehive GeyserDit is een van de meest spectaculaire geisers. Het water wordt tijdens een 4 tot 5 minuten durende eruptie omhoog geperst door een nauwe kegel, waardoor het soms wel een hoogte bereikt van 40 tot 55 meter. De uitbarstingen vinden niet regelmatig plaats, soms kan er 7 uur tussen zitten, soms ook een hele dag. En er zijn ook tijden dat de geiser enkele weken of maanden slapend is. Een kleine opening net ten oosten van de geiser wordt ook wel eens de Beehive Indicator genoemd. Als hier een kleine eruptie plaatsvindt, dan volgt de uitbarsting van Beehive Geyser meestal 10 tot 20 minuten later.Heart SpringDe geoloog George Marler vond dat de vorm van deze bron op een menselijk hart lijkt. Vandaar dat hij de bron in 1959 de naam Heart Spring gaf. De bron is aan de oppervlakte 2 bij 3 meter groot, en 4,5 meter diep. Heart Spring onderscheidt zich van de vele andere bronnen in het park door z’n heldere kleuren.Lion Group of GeysersDit is een groep van vier geisers, die ondergronds met elkaar verbonden zijn. De namen zijn: Lion, Lioness, Big Cub en Little Cub. Een eruptie wordt meestal vooraf gegaan door het plotselinge uitstoten van stoom, dat gepaard gaat met een diep brullend geluid. De erupties vinden plaats op onregelmatige tijden, de groep is soms niet actief.5324475-297942000Aurum GeyserDit is een mooi voorbeeld van een ‘cone-type geyser’. Soms is Aurum Geyser erg regelmatig, en kan je ongeveer 1x per drie of vier uur een eruptie verwachten. Maar er komen ook perioden voor waarin de geiser onvoorspelbaar is. Een uitbarsting duurt maximaal 90 seconden, en het water bereikt een hoogte van 4 tot 7 meter. Omdat de geiser dicht bij de boardwalk ligt, spat het water bij een krachtige uitbarsting over de toeschouwers heen. Dat voelt warm aan, maar is niet gevaarlijk.Doublet PoolTwee hete bronnen vormen samen een saffierblauwe poel, die zeer geliefd is bij fotografen. Er zitten diverse complex gevormde randen op verschillende hoogten, waaruit kan worden opgemaakt dat het waterniveau vroeger lager moet zijn geweest. Zo nu en dan produceert de poel onhoorbare maar wel voelbare bonzen; je kan hierdoor ook het water in beweging zien komen. Dit is waarschijnlijk het resultaat van gas- en stoombellen die diep onder de grond vrijkomen.Giantess GeyserDit is een geiser die maar twee tot zes keer per jaar uitbarst, maar dan wel bijzonder heftig. Net voor een uitbarsting kan je de omgeving voelen trillen als gevolg van ondergrondse stoomexplosies. Bij sommige erupties, die wel 12 tot 43 uur kunnen duren, bereikt het water een hoogte van 30 tot 60 meter. Het eerste uur is het meest spectaculair.Solitary GeyserDeze geiser werkt erg vaak, namelijk elke 4 tot 8 minuten. Een uitbarsting duurt ongeveer 1 minuut. Het water komt niet hoger dan 1,8 meter.Observation PointBoven op een heuvel ligt Observation Point, vanwaar je een compleet beeld hebt van de Upper Geyser Basin. Je bevindt je hier 76 meter boven Old Faithful. Mooie view van Old Faithful Geyser, zonder grote meute!Liberty PoolDit is een voorbeeld van een zogenaamde ‘lukewarm hot spring’; dat is een bron waarin het water soms zo koud is (lukewarm betekent ‘lauw’), dat er zelfs kikkers in kunnen leven.Sawmill GeyserHet is erg onvoorspelbaar hoe lang een eruptie van deze geiser duurt, dat kan enkele minuten zijn, maar ook 4 uur! Meestal bedraagt de interval tussen twee uitbarstingen 1 tot 3 uur. Het water draait in de krater, en daaraan heeft de geiser haar naam te danken.Spasmodic GeyserDe geiser heeft z’n naam te danken aan het grillige uitbarstingspatroon. Het water en de stoom komen naar buiten door ongeveer 20 openingen die op twee kraters liggen. Tijdens een grote uitbarsting varieert de hoogte van de verschillende waterstralen van enkele tientallen centimeters tot enkele meters. Ook vanuit twee poelen komt water omhoog, tot 4 à 5 meter. De op onregelmatige tijden voorkomende uitbarstingen kunnen enkele minuten duren, maar houden soms ook een paar uur aan.Grand GeyserDit is de grootste min of meer voorspelbare geiser ter wereld. Erupties vinden plaats met een interval van 7 tot 15 uur. Het water komt vanuit een grote poel omhoog, en heeft daardoor een heel ander effect dan bij Old Faithful. Daar zie je een rechte kolom, hier gaat het om een veel bredere uitbarsting. Als de geiser in werking treedt, zie je 1 tot 4 uitbarstingen die samen 9 tot 12 minuten duren. Het water kan 60 meter hoog komen.Turban GeyserDe bolvormige sintelophopingen op de bodem van deze geiser deden de geoloog Dr. A.C. Peale denken aan het Turkse hoofddeksel de tulband (turban in het Engels). Turban Geyser is verbonden met Grand Geyser. Normaal gesproken barst Turban Geyser elke 15 tot 25 minuten uit, een eruptie duurt dan 4 tot 5 minuten. Als het water in Turban’s krater stijgt, bevordert dat de kans op een eruptie van Grand Geyser. Gelijktijdig vindt dan ook een eruptie van Turban’s geiser plaats, die dan echter blijft voortduren tot wel een uur nadat Grand Geyser weer tot rust is gekomen.Crested PoolDeze poel is 13 meter diep. Soms zakt de temperatuur zodanig dat het water alleen maar zachtjes pruttelt, maar vaak staat het ook volop te koken. Op zo’n momenten kan het water een meter of drie omhoog spatten. Nabij de bodem is ooit een temperatuur van 114° C gemeten.Castle GeyserDeze geiser heeft de grootste kegel (3,6 meter) en is waarschijnlijk de oudste geyser in het basin. Het patroon van de erupties is vaak veranderd, tegenwoordig vinden uitbarstingen plaats met intervallen van 10 tot 12 uur. Het water kan een hoogte van 27 meter bereiken. Een uitbarsting duurt 20 minuten, en wordt gevolgd door een lawaaierige stoomfase die nog eens een half uur duurt.Orange SpringNoordelijk deel Upper Geyser Basin:Beauty Pool en Chromatic SpringDit zijn twee van de meest kleurrijke warmwaterbronnen in het park. In het midden is het water diepblauw, naar de randen toe gaat de blauwe kleur over in geel, oranje en rood. De mooie kleuren zijn onstaan door de aanwezigheid van specifieke bacteriën. Beide bronnen zijn met elkaar verbonden, als het water in de ene bron stijgt, daalt het in de andere.Oblong GeyserOblong betekent ‘langwerpig, rechthoekig’, en de geiser heeft deze naam te danken aan de vorm van de krater. De groen-blauw getinte poel en de sintelrand eromheen zien er net zo indrukwekkend uit als de uitbarstingen van deze geiser. Oblong wordt niet tot de grote geisers gerekend, maar toch komt er tijdens een eruptie een grote hoeveelheid water vrij. Het bereikt daarbij een hoogte van 6 tot 12 meter. De interval tussen twee uitbarstingen bedraagt meestal 4 tot 13 uur.Giant GeyserIn de jaren na 1955 was deze geiser niet actief. Daarna is er langzaam steeds meer activiteit ontstaan, er vindt nu elke 3 tot 10 dagen een eruptie plaats. Het zijn spectaculaire erupties, waarbij het water een hoogte bereikt tussen 55 en 76 meter. Giant Geyser heeft een indrukwekkende kegel die 3,5 meter groot is, met een aan de binnenzijde gemeten diameter van bijna 2 meter. De kegel is aan één zijde gebroken.Grotto GeyserDe 2,5 meter hoge kegel van Grotto Geyser heeft een opvallend grillige vorm. Tussen twee erupties kunnen enkele uren zitten, maar ook wel ooit enkele dagen. Ze duren vaak wel erg lang, tot meer dan 10 uur. Uit de opening hoor je constant gorgelende geluiden komen.6946900-190563500Riverside GeyserZoals uit de naam al opgemaakt kan worden, ligt deze geiser aan de oever van de Firehole River. Het is een van de meest pitoreske geisers; tijdens een uitbarsting kromt het water zich in een sierlijke boog over de rivier. De interval tussen twee uitbarstingen bedraagt ongeveer 7 uur; een uitbarsting kan worden voorzien doordat ongeveer 50 minuten van te voren het water in de krater begint te koken. Tijdens de eerste vijf minuten is de uitbarsting het meest heftig, daarna wordt de activiteit minder, en volgt er nog een periode waarin stoom wordt uitgeblazen.Chain LakesFan & Mortar GeysersDeze twee dicht bij elkaar liggende geisers barsten meestal gelijktijdig uit. De erupties vinden zeer onregelmatig plaats, soms kunnen er wel enkele maanden tussen zitten. Het water van Mortar Geyser komt maximaal 24 meter hoog, terwijl dat van Fan Geyser een hoogte van 38 meter kan bereiken.Morning Glory PoolDit is lang een van de favoriete bezienswaardigheden van de toeristen geweest. Helaas heeft de bron veel te lijden gehad van vandalisme; bezoekers hebben letterlijk tonnen aan keien, munten, hout en ander afval in de bron gegooid. Hierdoor is de watercirculatie ernstig verstoord, waardoor de thermische activiteit verloren ging, en de temperatuur is gedaald.Round SpringDaisy GroupComet Geyser heeft van de drie geisers uit deze groep de grootste kegel, maar veruit de kleinste uitbarsting. Het water spettert bijna constant omhoog, maar komt daarbij meestal niet hoger dan 2 meter. Daisy Geyser is vrij betrouwbaar, je kan hier elke 2 tot 4 uur een eruptie zien. Het water gaat omhoog in een hoek van 70°, en bereikt een hoogte van 23 meter. De nabijgelegen Splendid Geyser is veel minder voorspelbaar. Het water komt hier soms wel 60 meter hoog.Punch Bowl Spring Rondom deze krater, die gevuld is met kokend water, heeft zich een ruim 70 centimeter hoge rand gevormd. De bron heeft een diameter van 3,6 meter, en is 9 meter diep.Old Faithful Inn.Van Old Faithful naar Madison (van zuid naar noord):Black Sand Basin Trail. Startpunt 0,6 mijl ten noorden van Old Faithful, lengte 800m. (Emerald Pool & Opalescent Pool o.a.) Dit is een basin met een kleine collectie juweelachtige geisers en kleurrijke heetwaterbronnen. Daarvan is de diepe Emerald Pool de bekendste. Ook Opalescent Pool is erg mooi. Hier zijn enkele bomen gedood door overstromend heet water; het dode hout wordt nu langzaam geïmpregneerd en mogelijk zullen hier in de loop der tijd versteende bomen ontstaan. Andere bezienswaardigheden in dit gebied zijn: Spouter Geyser, Cliff Geyser, Rainbow Pool en Sunset Lake.574675026098500Biscuit Basin Trail. De voornaamste bezienswaardigheden zijn: de kleine maar wel erg actieve Rusty Geyser; de kristalhelder Sapphire Pool; Jewel Geyser, die regelmatig in een serie van 1 tot 5 erupties uitbarst; de zeer onregelmatige Shell Geyser; Avoca Spring, waar tijdens een eruptie het water diverse kanten tegelijk op spuit; en twee vlak bij elkaar gelegen bronnen die samen de Mustard Springs worden genoemd.Mystic Falls*** trail. Onderweg mooi uitzicht op Grand Prismatic Spring in Midway Geiser Basin! Voor het uitkijpunt naar Grand Prismatic Spring: volg de trail ongeveer 0,6 mijl, daarna aan linkerkant heuvel opklimmen. Geen officieel pad, maar velen zijn ons voorgegaan. Je hebt geen ‘mountain-gear’ nodig. Midway Geyser Basin Trail. Startpunt 6 mijl ten noorden van Old Faithful, lengte 800m. (Grand Prismatic Spring o.a.) Dit is een geïsoleerde thermische groep, die officieel deel uitmaakt van de verder naar het noorden gelegen Lower Geyser Basin. Via een houten wandelpad kan je een aantal erg grote heetwaterbronnen bekijken. Grand Prismatic Spring heeft een diameter van 110 meter, en is daarmee op twee na de grootste heetwaterbron ter wereld (de grootste ligt in Nieuw-Zeeland). De kleur van het water varieert van diep blauw in het midden, naar licht blauw, groen, geel en oranje. Excelcior Geyser was ooit de grootste geiser ter wereld, maar meer dan 100 jaar geleden hebben een aantal zeer krachtige erupties een gaslekkage veroorzaakt, waardoor veel van de thermische energie verloren ging. Door het kokende water binnenin de bron gaat Excelcior Geyser gehuld in een dikke laag stoom. Een andere mooie bron in dit gebied is Turquoise Pool, met een opvallende melkachtige witte bodem. Kleine mineralendeeltjes in het water zorgen voor een apart kleurenspel.231775-404495000Firehole Lake Drive. Eenrichtingsverkeer van zuid naar noordOp deze weg geldt eenrichtingverkeer, je mag alleen in noordelijke richting rijden. De weg eindigt weer aan de Grand Loop Road. Langs de Firehole Lake Drive liggen veel geisers en heetwaterbronnen. Hier ligt o.a. de zeer spectaculaire Great Fountain Geyser. Dit is een grote geiser die ongeveer 1x per 10 uur uitbarst, waarbij het water dan 30 tot 60 meter hoog kan komen. De geiser is omgeven door circelvormige plateaus, die lijken op kleine vijvers. Bij de uitbarstingen overstromen deze plateaus. De Firehole Lake Drive wordt veel minder druk bezocht dan de Old Faithful Area, zodat je hier alle kans hebt om de natuur ongestoord op je in te laten werken. Tijdens de lente en het begin van de zomer wordt de weg soms afgesloten, om de beren die hier dan kunnen voorkomen te beschermen.6781165-484568500Fountain Paint Pot Trail. Startpunt 8 mijl ten noorden van Old Faithful, lengte 800m. Er zijn vier verschillende soorten van thermische activiteit in Yellowstone National Park, en die zijn hier alle vier te zien. Je hebt hier geisers, heetwaterbronnen, modderpoelen en fumaroles (openingen waar gas of stoom uitkomt). Het gebied dankt haar naam aan een modderpoel met roze en grijze kleuren (het gevolg van ijzeroxide). Uit de bubbelende modder ontsnapt stoom en gas. In de lente en de vroege zomer is de kokende modder erg dun. Later in de zomer en in de herfst zit er minder vocht in de poel, waardoor de modder dikker wordt en allerlei vreemde vormen worden gecreëerd.Van Madison naar Norris (van zuid naar noord):Gibbon Falls****. Te zien vanaf pullouts langs de weg.Beryl SpringArtist Paint Pots Trail. Startpunt 10 mijl voorbij Madison, lengte 1.200m, hoogteverschil 17m. De Artists Paint Pots vormen samen een groep geïsoleerd liggende modderpoelen, die hun naam te danken hebben aan het feit dat ze allerlei pastelkleuren hebben. Vanaf de parkeerplaats loop je eerst over een bospad dat ongeveer 500 meter lang is naar het basin toe, vervolgens kan je via een circelvormig pad door het basin heen lopen. In de lente en de herfst is de modder erg dun, en zie je het volop borrelen. Gedurende de zomer wordt de modder dikker, en de modderspetters vliegen dan 3 tot 4 meter hoog de lucht in. Er worden daardoor ook modderkegels gevormd, die weer in de modderpoelen verdwijnen als het weer vochtiger wordt. Startpunt bij Norris Geyser Basin Museum, lengte 2,5km, weinig hoogteverschil.Je ziet hier o.a. de Porcelain Terrace Springs, een bijzonder zuur gebied waar het plantenleven geen kans heeft. Door sulfur en ijzeroxide ligt hier een dunne, kwetsbare korst die geel en oranje gekleurd is en die voortdurend aan verandering onderhevig is. Black Growler Steam Vent is een stoomopening (fumarole) op de wand van een heuvel. De stoom heeft een temperatuur die varieert tussen de 93 en 138° C. Even verder ligt de op één na grootste geiser van dit gebied, Ledge Geyser, die met regelmatige tussenposen van 14 uur het water schuin omhoog spuit, tot een hoogte van bijna 40 meter. Congress Pool ziet er niet altijd hetzelfde uit, soms zie je water met een bleke blauwe kleur, op andere dagen is het een kokende modderpoel. De wandeltocht voert verder langs de slapende Blue Geyser en Little Whirligig Geyser, langs de heetwaterbron Whale’s Mouth en langs Crackling Lake.Back Basin Loop Trail. Startpunt bij Norris Geyser Basin Museum, lengte 3,2km, weinig hoogteverschil.Tijdens deze wandeling zie je o.a. de grootste geiser ter wereld: Steamboat Geyser. De geiser heeft lange periodes van inactiviteit, je hebt dan ook geluk als je getuige kunt zijn van een van de enorme uitbarstingen waarbij het water tot 115 meter hoog kan komen. De Cistern Spring is sinds 1966 getransformeerd van een kleine, grauwe poel naar een grote, kleurrijke terrasvormige poel. Als Steamboat Geyser uitbarst, staat Cistern Spring vrijwel helemaal droog. Het duurt dan ongeveer drie dagen voordat het water weer op het oude niveau terug is. Een bijzonderheid van de Echinus Geyser is dat deze niet alleen water maar ook allerlei mineralen mee omhoog spuit. Het gevolg is dat Echinus één van de zuurste geisers van de wereld is. Hij heeft een PH van 3.5 en is daarmee bijna even zuur als azijn. Tijdens de wandeling zie je nog een groot aantal andere geisers en bronnen.Van Norris naar Mammoth Hot Springs:Roaring MountainRustic Falls.*** 4 mijl ten zuiden van Mammoth Springs. Goed te zien vanaf kleine parkeerplaats.Mammoth Hot Springs:In deze omgeving bevinden zich onder de grond grote hoeveelheden calciumcarbonaat. Doordat het water onder de grond heet is, kan het, in tegenstelling tot koud water, gemakkelijk calciumcarbonaat oplossen en mee omhoog voeren. Boven de grond koelt het water echter af. Het calciumcarbonaat kristalliseert dan als witte kalksteen uit en vormt allerlei terrassen, waarover het water uitstroomt. Geschat wordt dat er in totaal per minuut bijna 2000 liter water uit de heetwaterbronnen van Mammoth Hot Springs stroomt. Per dag voert dit water ongeveer 2000 kg kalksteen mee omhoog. De terrassen veranderen dan ook voortdurend van vorm. Sommige van de terrassen zijn mooi gekleurd. Dit wordt veroorzaakt door de algen en bacteriën die in het warme water leven. Als er onder of boven de grond echter iets gebeurt, en er stroomt geen heet water meer over de terrassen, dan krijgen de terrassen de kleur grijs en verliezen hun schoonheid. Dit proces gebeurt continu. Sommige van de mooiste terrassen van vroeger zijn nu grijs en oninteressant. De terrassen zijn in twee groepen verdeeld, de Lower Terraces en de Upper Terraces.right000Lower Terrace Interpretive Trail. Lengte ruim 2 km, hoogteverschil 90m.Rondom de Lower Terraces zijn houten voetpaden aangelegd, waardoor je alles van dichtbij kunt bekijken. Je kan hier een brochure kopen waarin informatie over de terrassen wordt gegeven. Het kan door de nabijheid van de bronnen erg warm zijn tijdens deze wandeling. Bovendien is er vrijwel geen schaduw. De meest noordelijke gelegen bezienswaardigheid is de 11 meter hoge Liberty Cap, zo genoemd vanwege de gelijkenis met het hoofddeksel van de patriotten tijdens de Revolutionary War. Vervolgens loop je langs terrassen met de namen Palette Spring, Cleopatra Terrace en Minerva Terrace. Het laatste gedeelte van de wandeling gaat vrij steil omhoog, naar een observatieplatform vanwaar je zicht hebt op Canary Spring en New Blue Spring. Het gebied is voortdurend aan verandering onderhevig, soms drogen bronnen op en verschijnen er weer nieuwe. Zo was Minerva Terrace enkele jaren geleden absoluut het mooiste deel van Mammoth Hot Springs, maar doordat er geen water meer over stroomt is het terras nu grauw en grijs. Op dit moment (2007) zijn de kleuren het mooist bij Canary Spring. Als je de klim naar boven wilt vermijden, kan je Canary Spring ook met de auto bereiken, via de Upper Terrace Loop Drive. De parkeergelegenheid is er echter beperkt.Upper Terrace Loop Drive. Startpunt 2 mijl ten zuiden van visitor center. Eenrichtingsverkeer, lengte 1,5 mijl.Van Mammoth Hot Springs naar North Entrance:Boiling River Trail. Startpunt op parkeerplaats vlakbij het bord “45th parallel of Lattitude, lengte 1,5km, geen hoogteverschil.Boiling River is een grote heetwaterbron in een gebied dat wordt omringd door uitgebreide vegetatie en ruige rotsen. Het hete water van Boiling River vermengt zich met het koude water van de Gardner River, waardoor grote wolken stoom ontstaan (zeker als het rivierwater erg koud is). Dit is een zeer populaire trail, mede doordat het is toegestaan om tijdens daglicht in de rivier te zwemmen. In de lente wordt de trail soms gesloten, omdat de waterstanden dan gevaarlijk hoog zijn. Het pad gaat voorbij de heetwaterbron gewoon verder, en het is zeker de moeite waard om nog een stukje langs de rivier verder te lopen.Van Mammoth Hot Springs naar Tower/Roosevelt (van west naar oost):Undine Falls***. 4 mijl ten oosten van Mammoth Hot Springs, te zien vanaf uitkijkpunt langs de weg.Blacktail Plateau Drive. Mooi uitzicht over Yellowstone.Washburn Hot Springs Overlookright63500Canyon Village:North Rim Drive, 4 mijl lange eenrichtingsweg (start bij visitor center)Zijweg naar Inspiration Point van 0,8mijl, met Glacial Boulder (granieten rotsblok ter grootte van een huis)Cascade Overlook Trail. Lengte 2,4km.Deze trail begint bij Glacial Boulder. Vandaar is het 1200 meter lopen naar de Silver Cord Cascade Overlook. Je ziet hier hoe aan de overkant van het ravijn het water van Surface Creek trapsgewijs ruim 1000 meter het ravijn in valt.Inspiration Point. Als je - aan het einde van de zijweg - naar het links gelegen uiteinde van de parkeerplaats loopt, kan je Yellowstone River een heel stuk stroomafwaarts tussen de boomrijke wanden van de canyon zien stromen. Stroomopwaarts heb je het mooiste zicht als je vanaf de parkeerplaats 50 treden naar beneden gaat, aan deze kant zijn de rotswanden veel kaler en je kan hier dus goed zien hoe kleurrijk ze zijn. Heel in de verte kan je Lower Falls zien.Grandview Point (kleurrijke deel van de canyon)Lookout Point (eerste plek waar je de Lower Falls ***** kan zien)Red Rock Trail. Lengte 800m, hoogteverschil 150mVia een prachtig aangelegd wandelpad, tussen rotsen en bomen, ga je over een afstand van 400 meter continu omlaag. Het laatste deel bestaat uit een houten boardwalk met veel trappen. Uiteindelijk bereik je een platform direct naast een opvallend rode rots, vanwaar je van vrij dichtbij Lower Falls kunt zien. Via hetzelfde pad loop je terug naar de parkeerplaats, dit is een behoorlijk zware klim.Brink of the Lower Falls Trail. Startpunt kort voor einde North Rim Drive, lengte 800m, hoogteverschil 180m.Via een aantal switchbacks (bochten) daal je af naar een platform op een steenworp afstand van de top van de Lower Falls. Het water lijkt vanaf dit punt groen van kleur. Tijdens de lente zie je hoe hier per seconde 240.000 liter water over de rand valt, in de herfst is dit nog altijd zo’n 20.000 liter per seconde.Terug op de Grand Loop rd, na 0,3 mijl via zijweg naar laatste uitkijkpunt North RimVanaf de parkeerplaats kan je via ongeveer 60 traptreden afdalen naar een platform dat ligt naast de top van de Upper Falls. Met z’n 33 meter hoogte is deze waterval beduidend minder hoog dan de Lower Falls, maar toch is ook dit natuurverschijnsel erg indrukwekkend om te zien. Je bevindt je hier zo dicht bij de waterval, dat je de trilling die door het neerstortende water wordt veroorzaakt kunt voelen.Crystal Falls****. Lengte trail: 0,4 mijl, easy.Directions: From Canyon, drive south on the Grand Loop Rd towards Fishing Bridge, to the signed turnoff for the Brink of the Upper Falls. Park in the parking area and walk back up the road to the North Rim Trail.South Rim Drive, 1,5 mijl.Upper Falls***** Viewpoint. Uncle Tom’s Trail.De trail bestaat uit enkele geasfalteerde hellingen en daarna 328 traptreden van geperforeerd staal. Via deze traptreden leg je ongeveer ¾ deel van de afstand naar de bodem van de canyon af. De trail eindigt bij een klein platform, vanwaar je een prachtig zicht hebt op Lower Falls en op Yellowstone River (stroomopwaarts). Je kan soms een dubbele regenboog in de mist boven het water zien. De klim terug omhoog is behoorlijk zwaar. Tijdens de wintermaanden is de trail afgesloten, en ook tijdens de lente en de herfst kan het voorkomen dat je hier niet mag lopen.South Rim Trail. Als je de waterval van nog wat dichterbij wilt zien, loop dan vanaf het Upper Falls Viewpoint via een wandelpad (de South Rim Trail) in de richting van de waterval tot aan een bruggetje. Het uitkijkpunt vanaf dat bruggetje heeft geen officiële naam, maar vooral in de ochtend is dit toch een erg mooie plek omdat je dan een regenboog in het water kunt zien.Artist Point. Drive north from the Trans Canada highway at Lake Louise Village along the Icefields Parkway 36 km or south from Bow Summit for 5 km to the turn off for the Num-Ti-Jah Lodge and Bow Lake (not the picnic area). The trail starts behind the lodge and proceeds 4.7 km to the base of the falls.Silverton Falls**** Directions: To get to the waterfall, start hiking along the Rockbound Lake Trail. Look for a small (unmarked) trail off to the right after about 200 metres. The trail leads to a bridge over Silverton Creek.
