Analysing Videos Together: Skills for Support Research
1. Skills for Support
Lisa Ponting and
Kerrie Ford: OUR
VIEWS matter
We worked for
WECIL (disabled
people’s views
matter)
Norah Fry Research
Centre helped us
2. What is analysis?
Pulling a rabbit out of a
hat?
• I am a scientist
• I know the right methods
• Therefore I can find out
what this all means
Hey
presto!
Mostly that is not the way
things work….
3. Analysis is always from someone’s point
of view
“We are the
artists of our
lives”
Journey to Independence: 1999-2002
4. I know what the
research means
to me – because
it’s about my life
5. Our research was about
support
• From my point of
view, support is about
being friends
We’re just friends!
6. I helped decide on the main
themes
Respect
Choices
Advice
Being friendly
Support to speak up
7. Making videos
So let’s see what
these themes mean
– how do support
workers do these
things?
8. Being friendly
• We looked at body
language
• People were friendly to
each other
• They were able to have a
good laugh
• They had good team
work
Why is this ‘new’? It’s treating each other like human
beings!
9. Then we picked out the parts of the video that
showed ‘being friendly’
10. Val’s bit: looking at how the
joke is done
1st part
Sue: Go on - You can have that
one
Receptionist: This is a bigger room
Sue:
Is it really?
2 part
nd
Andrew: You have number 10 and
I’ll have number 12
11. Pick the
best bits
Go
over
the
detail
Team work
Tell us
who to
go to
Help to
get the
‘main
themes’
Val takes the detailed analysis back to Lisa
and Kerrie: their views matter!
12. Making sure we do
good research
Good inclusive
research needs
skilled researchers
Why do we need
separate spaces to
learn?
Can we come toether?
13. Impact
• Good inclusive
research has its own
quality standards
• E.g. analysis can be
more ‘open’ and in
the here-and-now
• We will only have an
impact if we do it
well.
Notas do Editor
Who are they?
Getting out and about, remembering the event – who you met, where you were, what you thought at the time. How do you remember? Photos, notes, conversations…
The reason Gordon could work out successfully what it meant was that he had his own experience to draw on. For instance, he knew that direct payments support meant that he got his own PA, who would encourage him to make the decisions. That was the important thing.
