2. PRELIMINARY ACTIVITY
1. What common purpose do these pictures serve?
2. How do they differ?
3. If you were asked to arrange the item in any order, how would you do it?
4. Can you think of another item to be added to the selection? What is it and
why?
5. Draw your suggested item on the last empty box at the end of the picture
?
3. INTRODUCTION
The invention of writing has helped greatly in
building man’s early civilizations.
Without the written word, they would not have
been able to preserve our knowledge and pass
them to the next generation. Even commerce
could not have developed fully in the early times
without records of transactions.
4. WRITING SYSTEM
A writing system is an organized, regular method
(typically standardized) of information storage
and transfer for the communication of messages
(expressing thoughts or ideas) in a language by
visually (or possibly tactilely) encoding and
decoding (known as writing and reading) with a
set of signs or symbols, both known generally as
characters (with the set collectively referred to as
a 'script')
5. ANCIENT WRITING SYSTEM ANDTOOLS
Cuneiform script- is one of the
earliest known systems of
writing, distinguished by its
wedge-shaped marks on clay
tablets, made by means of a
blunt reed for a stylus.The
name cuneiform itself simply
means "wedge shaped"
6. ANCIENT WRITING SYSTEM ANDTOOLS
Egyptian hieroglyphs or (god's
words) were a formal writing
system used by the ancient
Egyptians that combined
logographic and alphabetic
elements. Egyptians used cursive
hieroglyphs for religious literature
on papyrus and wood.
8. A. Decode the following Egyptian
hieroglyphs.Then encode on a sheet
of paper.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.B. After decoding, construct or form any
two words from it.
9. Man had written symbols on different
materials. The most durable of these is
stone.Today we write on paper which is
more convenient, although less strong
than stone. Chisel, of course, was used
to carve writing on stone. Then early
people discovered then pen and ink to
write on paper. The printing press made
reproducing printed materials easier,
faster, and more economical, In the 20th
century, writing technology was taken
into higher level by the invention of the
typewriter.
10. The typewriter has largely been replaced by the word processor, a
term used to refer to a computer developed only for the purpose of
writing.Today, a word processor can also mean a program installed
in a multi purpose computer.This includes…………………
A word processor is an electric or
electronic device, or computer
software application, that, as directed
by the user, performs word
processing: the composition, editing,
formatting, and sometimes printing of
any sort of written material.
11. What is Word Processing?
Word processing can be defined as the
manipulation of computer generated
text data including creating, editing,
storing, retrieving and printing a
document.
12. WORDSTAR -THE FIRSTWORD
PROCESSOR
Released in 1979 by Micropro International, WordStar was the first
commercially successful word processing software program produced for
microcomputers and the best selling software program of the early
eighties.
WordStar is a word processor application that had a dominant market share during
the early- to mid-1980s. Formerly published by MicroPro International it was
originally written for the CP/M operating system but later ported to DOS. Although
Seymour I. Rubinstein was the principal owner of the company, Rob Barnaby was the
sole author of the early versions of the program. Starting with WordStar 4.0, the
program was built on new code written principally by Peter Mierau.
WordStar was the first microcomputer word processor to offer mail
merge and WYSIWYG.

14. WORD PERFECT
The 3.0 version ofWordStar for DOS was released in 1982.Within three years,
WordStar was the most popular word processing software in the world.
However by the late 1980s, programs likeWordPerfect knocked Wordstar out
of the word processing market after the poor performance ofWordStar 2000.
WordPerfect is a word processing application owned by Corel with a long
history on multiple personal computer platforms.
Bruce Bastian, a BrighamYoung University (BYU) graduate student, and BYU
computer science professor Dr. Alan Ashton joined forces to design a word
processing system for the city of Orem's Data General minicomputer system in
1979.

17. OPEN OFFICEWRITER
OpenOfficeWriter is the word processor part of the
OpenOffice software package.Writer is a word
processor that is like MicrosoftWord and Corel's
WordPerfect.
Just like all of the OpenOffice suite,Writer can be used
on many Operating Systems, including Mac OS X,
MicrosoftWindows, Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris.
Released under the terms of the Apache License,Writer
is free software.

19. MICROSOFT WORD (MS WORD)
MS Word is a feature of the
Microsoft Office package
especially designed to process
and create documents like
letters, journals, and other office
or school written materials.The
program comes with special
features that make preparation
of documents easier, faster, and
better looking.

21. DEVELOPMENT OF MS OFFICEWORD
The first version of Microsoft Word was
developed by Charles Simonyi and Richard
Brodie, former Xerox programmers hired
by Bill Gates and Paul Allen in 1981. Both
programmers worked on Xerox Bravo, the
first WYSIWYG word processor.
