                  Expository

                Observational
Participatory
                                Reflexive
A poetic documentary uses juxtaposition Click here for analysis
to make the audience question what's
going on in the documentary and gets the
audience involved. Poetic mode of
documentary film tends toward subjective
interpretations of its subject. Poetic
documentaries forsake traditional
narrative content, individual characters
and events remain undeveloped, in
favour of creating a particular mood or
tone.

This documentary type doesn’t give any
clues to the audience and wants them to
work out the documentary for themselves http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a
so it moves away from the objective. It JHPNg7YdgY
creates different moods for the audience
as how they would see it.
This type of documentary is where Click here for analysis
the filmmaker becomes a part of
the documentary and the events
being recorded. The filmmaker has
a direct impact towards filming. As
viewers the audience has the
chance to be able to see the
filmmaker in the actual
documentary.

An example of a participatory
documentary would be Alone in the
wild where its just a man and his
camera in the wild so the filmmaker http://www.channel4.com/programmes
is involved in the documentary. /alone-in-the-wild/4od
This type of documentary involves a
narrator speaking which is known as
‘voice of God’. This type of
documentary films real life with real
people, places and lifestyle. This
could be of a person or place and a
group of people. The audience are
directly addressed by real information http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
and real things taking place, so Djx0OrHHi6E
nothing is set up. This type of
documentary is used a lot for filming
footballers or nature.

An example of this type would be
footballers greatest, which features
ronaldinho .

                                          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=
                                          8absGUSLQx4
This type of documentary involves
the camera man just staying behind http://www.channel4.com/pr
the camera like he isn't there. The ogrammes/big-fat-gypsy-
camera man/women have no impact weddings/4od
in the filming and are ignored by the
surroundings. The camera has to
stick to the action at all times. So the
person behind the camera really has
no control of what happens in the
clip.

An example of this type of
documentary would be ‘my big fat
gypsy wedding, on channel 4 where
the person is filming the everyday
life.
In a reflexive type of documentary the
audience are made aware of the things
like sound and editing in the clip and
know that the cameraman s there by
seeing them. This type of documentary
acknowledges the constructed nature of
a documentary and shows this. It makes
the audience more aware of the
problems the documentary maker faces
while they make the film. So a reflective
documentary conveys to people that this
is not necessarily "truth" but a http://www.channel4.com/pr
reconstruction of it. ogrammes/make-bradford-
                                            british/4od
An example of a reflexive documentary is
Make Bradford British which is a channel
4 documentary.
A performative mode of documentary is where the filmmaker can be
a participant in the documentary. It emphasises the subjective
nature of the documentarian as well as acknowledging the
subjective reading of the audience. This mode emphasizes the
emotional and social impact on the audience and gives them a
feeling of what it is like.

An example of a performative documentary is supersize me.
