Computer and Network Setup
Basics

       • Protect your computer from viruses and attackers with antivirus software, i.e.
MacAfee, Norton, Panda, Av Free, etc.
       • Protect your wireless router
              – Use WPA (Wi-Fi protected access) security and select a unique password or a
short phrase (less than 64 characters)
              – Turn off SSID (service set identifier); this means you will be invisible to anyone
                 sniffing for networks
              – Change your router’s name from the default – do not use family name
       • Protect your settings and files – add passwords and back up files to a secure storage
             device

                                                                                                     26

Browsing the Internet
―Be Anonymous, Be Invisible‖
   • Be aware of the sites you visit
           – Don’t download anything from non-trusted sites
           – Look at a site’s address (URL) to make sure it is where you intended to visit
           – For transactions (banking, etc.) only use sites that have ―HTTPS‖ in their
             addresses
           – Many financial institutions now use site keys—a picture and phrase that you
select—to make sure that you are on the legitimate site. Use them when
             available
           – Don’t download any add-ons suggested by a site unless you are certain that
they are safe. When in doubt, consult a pro
           – Remain as anonymous as you can
               • Don’t fill out forms and divulge personal information unless you
                 absolutely must
   • Make sure site is verified by VeriSign, TRUSTe, or BBEonline
   • Educate yourself about phishing https://www.phish-no-
     phish.com/default.aspx

                                                                                       27

Passwords

Passwords should have nothing to do with your lifestyle,
       family, hobbies, etc.
         – Passwords should not be an actual word
         – Use numbers and special characters within password
         – Change your passwords frequently
         – Use different passwords for different applications,
           workstations, accounts and memberships
            • The less overlap the better
         – Try using an acronym based on a memorable phrase to
           create ―gibberish‖ passwords.
            • For example, the rhyme ―3 Blind Mice, See How They
Run‖ can be the basis of the password ―3Bm,sHtR‖

                                                                   28

Protecting your Email

       • Keep your personal (ISP provided) email as private as
         possible
              – Use a screen name that is different than your real name
              – Set up a Gmail or Yahoo account for shopping or for
                registering on different sites
       • Never divulge personal information in response to an
         email from any institution
              – Your bank, broker, utility, etc. will not ask for personal
                information; they already have it

                                                                             29

Protecting your Email
  • Do not fall prey to common Internet scams
         – Nigerian investment scams, money in Iraq, etc.
         – No random email requesting funds is ever legitimate
         – Never divulge bank account numbers, routing numbers or even the name of
           your bank over email
  • No one will ever seek you out to offer you money
  • Do not reply to spam emails
         – Your reply lets them know that your address is valid
         – Instead, block them through your email program
             • Report Spam or Add to Junk Mail
         – Don’t ever open or download a file or add-on from an unknown source
         – Type the unknown sender’s name into Google and you can usually find
           information about their scam

                                                                                     30
