YOUniversity
Quality personal and Family life skills education for the military community.
The high school experience can be one of the most rewarding periods during a teen-
ager’s life. It is during this time students begin to develop and determine their inter-
est for college and life as an individual. If parents are knowledgeable of the re-
sources accessible to them, they can increase their student’s success and begin early
preparations for life after high school. This article’s focus is on information parents
should know when their son or daughter enters high school. During my tenure as a
high school teacher, assistant principal, and Principal, I observed students entering
their freshmen year with excitement and good intentions; nonetheless, they lacked
focus. They were excited about new experiences, making friends, and extracurricular
activities; however, they were unaware of the importance of each activity they par-
ticipated in and the significance of the classes they would take in preparing for life
beyond high school. The goal of high school is to reinforce the skills learned in previ-
ous grades and to grow and challenge students’ intellectual skills. High school
classes should challenge students to think critically and to synthesize information.
Class work should also require them to work individually, as well as in groups.
College entrance requirements are much more rigorous today in comparison to
twenty years ago. The average ACT composite score in 2012 was 21 (ACT 2013).
This is the sum of four tests (English, Reading, Mathematics, and Science). The
higher a student’s composite score, the more competitive she is when applying for
scholarships. Additionally, a student’s grade point average (GPA), community ser-
vice, and extracurricular activities are taken in consideration when competing for
scholarships.
There are many resources that are available to students entering high
school. Resources ranging from counseling support, Advance Placement,
International Baccalaureate, and fine art classes. Additionally, classes
such as ACT/SAT preparation, Career Technology, and ROTC are also
available for students.
Parents should immediately begin working with a counselor to create an academic
plan for their students. This plan includes courses the student will take each school
year; specifically classes that will help the student accomplish his or her goals be-
yond high school. For example, if a student wants to be an engineer, he should
take higher level math and science courses. This will ensure that the student has a
strong math and science foundation entering college. Even the extracurricular ac-
tivities students participate in should support their goals. Band, choir, drama, and
sports can create opportunities for students with strong work ethics. The possibili-
ties are unlimited when an academic plan is created and implemented.
Many parents base their understanding of high school on past experiences, unaware
of the changes that have taken place in schools. It is imperative that parents de-
velop strong relationships with teachers, counselors and school administrators. Par-
ents should assist their students in selecting classes that will prepare them for life
after high school. This is called being “College and Career Ready”. In other words,

regardless of the goal a student may have (attend a four year college, technical college, the military or joining
the work force), he or she must have the skills to be successful. The more education you get the more likely it
is you will always have a job. According to one estimate, by the year 2028 there will be 19 million more jobs
for educated workers than there are qualified people to fill them (ACT 2013).
Parents should also visit the school as often as possible. I realize that most parents work and that visiting a
school isn’t the top priority. However, I also understand that when students see their parents take an active
interest in their high school experience, they (the student) perform with greater confidence and achievement.
Parental involvement also sends a strong message to the adults in the school. It says we as a community
value education and we respect our educators.

The high school experience can be one of the most rewarding periods during a teen- ager’s life. It is during this time students begin to develop and determine their inter- est for college and life as an individual. If parents are knowledgeable of the re- sources accessible to them, they can increase their student’s success and begin early preparations for life after high school. This article’s focus is on information parents should know when their son or daughter enters high school. During my tenure as a high school teacher, assistant principal, and Principal, I observed students entering their freshmen year with excitement and good intentions; nonetheless, they lacked focus. They were excited about new experiences, making friends, and extracurricular activities; however, they were unaware of the importance of each activity they par- ticipated in and the significance of the classes they would take in preparing for life beyond high school. The goal of high school is to reinforce the skills learned in previ- ous grades and to grow and challenge students’ intellectual skills. High school classes should challenge students to think critically and to synthesize information. Class work should also require them to work individually, as well as in groups. College entrance requirements are much more rigorous today in comparison to twenty years ago. The average ACT composite score in 2012 was 21 (ACT 2013). This is the sum of four tests (English, Reading, Mathematics, and Science). The higher a student’s composite score, the more competitive she is when applying for scholarships. Additionally, a student’s grade point average (GPA), community ser- vice, and extracurricular activities are taken in consideration when competing for scholarships. There are many resources that are available to students entering high school. Resources ranging from counseling support, Advance Placement, International Baccalaureate, and fine art classes. Additionally, classes such as ACT/SAT preparation, Career Technology, and ROTC are also available for students. Parents should immediately begin working with a counselor to create an academic plan for their students. This plan includes courses the student will take each school year; specifically classes that will help the student accomplish his or her goals be- yond high school. For example, if a student wants to be an engineer, he should take higher level math and science courses. This will ensure that the student has a strong math and science foundation entering college. Even the extracurricular ac- tivities students participate in should support their goals. Band, choir, drama, and sports can create opportunities for students with strong work ethics. The possibili- ties are unlimited when an academic plan is created and implemented. Many parents base their understanding of high school on past experiences, unaware of the changes that have taken place in schools. It is imperative that parents de- velop strong relationships with teachers, counselors and school administrators. Par- ents should assist their students in selecting classes that will prepare them for life after high school. This is called being “College and Career Ready”. In other words, (Continued on page 5)

The more education you get the more likely it is you will always have a job. According to one estimate, by the year 2028 there will be 19 million more jobs for educated workers than there are qualified people to fill them (ACT 2013). Parents should also visit the school as often as possible. I realize that most parents work and that visiting a school isn’t the top priority. However, I also understand that when students see their parents take an active interest in their high school experience, they (the student) perform with greater confidence and achievement. Parental involvement also sends a strong message to the adults in the school. It says we as a community value education and we respect our educators.
