Its an introductory lecture intended to draw the attention of fresh graduates enrolled in Environment and Natural Resources Research Institute - NCR Sudan
2. Global concern about the
environment
Increasing threat to the survival of species and
integrity of habitats and ecosystems as the result of the
pressure on natural resources by the increasing
population in earth.
The need to address all aspects of environment:
genetic resources, species and ecosystems, pollution of
water, soil and air. persistent organic pollutants,
degradation of land, habitat and living conditions,
accumulations of objectionable waters, treatment
processes of wastes and maintaining a balance
between development and the environment
3. Pioneers
Rachel Carson wrote her book
“Silent Spring” in 62 to be the
first book to draw the public
concern to pesticides and
pollution of the environment.
Silent Spring facilitated the ban
of the pesticide DDT in 1972 in
the United States. The book was
widely credited with helping
launch the environmental
movement.
The first official alert was raised
in 1968 when the Sweden
delegate in the United Nations
raised the issue of environment
at UN level.
4. Rachel said
Miners use canaries to warn them of
deadly gases. It might not be a bad
idea if we took the same warning
from deadly birds in our
environment……..
5. What followed
It took the world 4 yrs to
initiate the first conference in
human environment in June
1972 Stockholm where very
important outcome from the
conference:
1. Declaration on Human
Environment and
2. Considering 5 June as world
environment day and
3. The establishment of the
United Nations
Environment Programme
(UNEP)
6. Declaration on human
environment
This is the name of the convention and it is considered as one of
the very important effort of the globe in environment. In that
conference 113 countries signed this declaration that included 26
items… most important of which:
Betterment of living condition of man
Conservation and rational use of environment
Pollution abatement
Raising the awareness of people towards the environment
Concern about research in environment and its relevance in
solving environmental problems
Establish multilateral cooperation between the countries to
enhance partnerships
Rational growth of population
Rational use of natural resources
7. Declaration on human
environment
The declaration on human environment also included monitoring tools
to discover problems, lack of information and enhance research on
environment to provide new information and make it available to every
one…denoted by EARTH WATCH and its main concern is to:
Management plans to protect, conserve and rehabilitation of resources
for future generation
And they adopted measurements to help in the Plan of Work in Human
Environment like:
Environmental Education
Environmental awareness
Since they noticed that the syllabus in the general education does not
include environmental issues so the convention called for
environmental education at all levels and the necessity of training
teachers to convey the concepts of environment and incorporate them
in their subjects
8. Follow up
After 10 years and again in Kenya
the Globe evaluated the past 10
years work in the human
environment.
Another 10 years marked the
Earth Summit in Rio 1992 where
most of the important
conventions emerged from that
summit, Agenda 21,
Desertification, Biodiversity,
Climate Change ..etc..
Furthermore, Johannesburg in
2002 evaluated all the work in
human environment
Sudan was present in all the
above events; public and official
levels
9. National Concern
In recognition of the importance of environmental protection for
the sustainable development of Sudan, as well as for the
fulfillment of the various United Nations global environmental
commitments, the government established:
The Higher Council for Environment and Natural Resources
(HCENR) in 1992
The Ministry of Environment and Tourism, now Ministry of
Environment and Physical Development to oversee overall
environmental management and integrate environmental
protection into national development strategies. In addition to the
HCENR,
Other line ministries with significant roles and responsibilities in
the areas of natural resource management, land use planning, and
socio-economic development
Many NGOs emerged and contributed effectively to environmental
management and protection.
Environmental education is booming at both graduate and post-
grad levels
10. World Environment Day 5 June 2015…
The main celebrations

Day 2015 was hosted in
Milan, Italy. WED,
