Mr. Tony O Brien, the Director General of the Health Service, gave a presentation on April 2nd 2014 about reforming Ireland's health services by "breaking the mould" of the current industrial-age system. He discussed how healthcare has changed little since 1924 and that true reform requires transitioning to an information-age model where professionals act as facilitators and partners rather than authorities. This would see a shift to more integrated community-based care that is safe, timely, efficient and located as close to home as possible for patients. National clinical programmes and quality patient care standards in each division of the health service would also support the range of services under this new reform approach.
