MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) are online courses that are open to unlimited learners worldwide and are generally free. They provide structured learning with a defined start and end date. There are two categories of MOOCs - xMOOCs which focus on educator-generated content like videos with automated testing, and cMOOCs which are more organic and focus on learner-generated content and collective knowledge building. MOOCs have components like a syllabus, course materials, a learning community, and support. They offer advantages like being open to anyone online, options for free or accredited courses, personalized self-paced learning, and peer collaboration.

Island in response to a course called Connectivism
and Connective Knowledge which was led

xMOOCs–These are organized courses, focused around
educator generated content(often in the form of video)
with automated testing; they offer a linear journey for
the learner and will provide structured opportunities
for discussion.
cMOOCs–These are more organic courses, focused
around learner generated content, and provide a personal
and very subjective learning experience; these courses use
the collective intelligence of the learning community to
generate knowledge and are participant led.
