4. Message from the Director
Dear Recruiters,
Today’s dynamic business environment is competitive, far reaching, devoid of boundaries and incessantly
amalgamating the world’s economies. Moreover, the shadow of recession is still lingering in the developed and
the developing economies of the world. To survive in this intense and uncertain times each of the players – old
and new – needs to protect its territory or create new ones.
To endure and flourish in this environment it is imperative for executives to incessantly update their knowledge
and awareness and to acquire new skills and competencies. At XLRI we recognize this and nurture the
participants through the journey with focused course content, lectures and faculty interactions. At the same
time, we believe there are neither enough formulas nor business cases to stretch the boundaries and span the
range of decisions faced in a career. That is why our approach to learning embraces a meticulous, “probe-every-
solution” attitude and an appraisal of every problem through the lens of basic business disciplines. Pursuit of
Excellence in academics, personal values and social concern has been the vision of XLRI and the current batch
of GMP truly shares this vision.
The obvious consequence of the XLRI rigor and the GMP pedigree is the creation of responsible, thoughtful
leaders who will create value for their organizations and their communities. I am certain that with the
contributions from the program the participants are ready to lead your organization toward sustaining growth
and development.
I welcome you to discover the talent of the GMP 2012–13.

5. Message from the Dean
Dear Recruiters,
It is quite likely that in general, the management graduates in India lack substantial industry experience and
their education being highly theoretical in nature, fail to appreciate real challenges which companies and
industries encounter on a day-to-day basis. To overcome this serious lacunae, XLRI pioneered the General
Management Programme (GMP) as a program for middle-level and senior level managers across sectors to
hone their managerial experience and skills by providing a strong grounding on management theories.
The participants are practicing managers with more than 900 years of cumulative experience in diverse
functions and share the flair of excelling in every task they undertake. The teaching methodology for GMP
is rigorous and well-rounded, blending business acumen in the fundamental courses with a wide range of
electives. This AICTE approved, 15-months fully residential programme has a healthy mix of classroom lectures
and discussions, case based studies and projects imparting a broad outlook, enriching the participants and
encouraging them to think beyond their limits and identify out-of-the-box solutions and challenge the status-
quo.
GMP offers a unique opportunity to develop a holistic understanding of various business functions, maximize
peer to peer learning and gain a leading edge in their areas of interest. The graduates not only carry with them
the requisite functional knowledge but also are multi-faceted and complete individuals who are well prepared
and deployable right from the start in various organizational roles and divisions in the industry. I welcome you
to come and interact with these highly motivated future leaders.

7. XLRI Values
XLRI, started in 1949, is a pioneer in management
education in India.
The institute over the years has shaped enthusiastic minds into future
business leaders with competence and dedication. Sixty two glorious years
later, it is still recognized as one of the strongest pillars supporting the
progress of Indian Business Environment.
XLRI passes on its spirit of “Magis”—ever greater, ever better, excellence—to
its students and propels them to strive for integral development apart from
academic excellence.
Its value based system propels its protégés to balance the dichotomy of
Innovation vs. Exploitation, Patriotism vs. Global Vision, Assertiveness vs.
Humility, Growth vs Sustainability and Profit vs. Social Consciousness.
These values not only lay emphasis on making highly proficient and effective
business managers but also socially and morally responsible human beings.
Attaining Global Excellence
We at XLRI address the potential value of using collaborative technology and the
importance of identifying specific business drivers for successful enterprise collaboration
initiatives in our managers.

8. The GMP Course
GMP is a 15 month* AICTE approved flagship full time MBA program of XLRI, for
executives with at least 5 years of work experience.
With GMP, XLRI infuses practicing managers in the industry a clear sense of direction
by exposing them to the entire gamut of functions in business management. Since
its inception, the GMP is specifically aimed at bridging the gap for middle and senior
management roles in the industry by selecting outstanding professionals and exposing
them to key knowledge areas of management.
GMP has a blend of seasoned professionals, from entrepreneurs to doctors and
scientists, chartered accountants, bankers, and healthcare professionals, representing
wide array of sectors such as Manufacturing, Energy and Infrastructure to name a
few. XLRI’s proficiency in management education and the hands on experience brought
in by participants chosen after a rigorous admission procedure makes the General
Management Programme (GMP) a one of its kind in India.
* Includes 12 months in-campus study and 3 months offline project work. Students will
be available for joining in May.
Changing the World
Professionals taking up the GMP course redefine the spirit of kites touching the sky.
They soar on the invincible strings of commitment, perseverance and discipline.
9. Pedagogy includes case studies, group projects, and independent field
work with special emphasis on team learning. For example, a chartered
accountant, an IT professional, an auto sales manager, a trader and a
doctor work collectively as a group for 30% of their grades!
Simulated strategy games like Capstone® enables students to
understand, appreciate and imbibe decision making through advanced
business finance, cross functional alignment and competitive analysis.
The student clubs and industry focus groups organize a large number
of events that foster and build the leadership potential and industrial
knowledge in each participant. What’s more, some GMPians of this
batch have successfully started their own ventures, while still studying
in the college, as part of entrepreneur club activities!
The course’s uniqueness also stems from the strong ethical and
responsible leadership framework upon which the business and
managerial skills are built.
