„Twas the night before the holidays and the marketer was at his desk…

…thinking about next year‟s campaign – he wanted to make it THE BEST.
He hummed and he hawed, then felt a shiver ever so near.

It came from a shadowy figure holding a can of…beer?
“I am the ghost of marketing past,” he stumbled and said.
“Do you remember all of those good times we had?”
“Book some TV, print and radio – then you‟re gone…

…home to sing carols and your favorite holiday song.”
The ghost of marketing past continued and shouted,
“It was all about us – we spoke and the masses nodded.”
“Quit your whining!” came a thunderous roar.

„Twas the ghost of marketing present crashing to the floor.
“You‟re old school – no one cares about you anymore.
It‟s all about ME! I‟m doing marketing HARDCORE!”
“Email, social media and banner ads galore…

…just talk about yourself – fast and cheap – that‟s how you score!”
Then, out of nowhere, there came a blinding spark.

It was as if the light ripped a hole in the dark.
Late to the party, it was the ghost of marketing future…

…confidently arriving to give the marketer his cure.
She said, “The best marketing you‟ll ever do is already in your hands.
To give you a guess, it‟s your evangelists, customers and fans.”
“Make them a priority and you will be among the amazing greats.
Just remember: it‟s not only about you – it‟s about your…”
With a ring from his phone, he jolted awake.
He had fallen asleep. “Wow, it‟s getting pretty late!”
“Hi honey, I‟m packing up and coming home.”
He rounded up his documents and hung up the phone.
He stared ahead of him and finally realized
that the answer was always in front of his eyes.
No longer perplexed, he was free from his marketing maze.
