Transportation planning is an integral part of overall urban planning and needs systematic approach. Travel demand estimation is an important part of comprehensive transportation planning process. However, planning does not end by predicting travel demand. The ultimate aim of urban transport planning is to generate alternatives for improving transportation system to meet future demand and selecting the best alternative after proper evaluation.

While Uber has challenged taxi drivers, multiple passenger ride sharing service can give us the both of best worlds: short travel times and low prices. They can provide the low prices of public transport with the short travel times of private cars or single passenger taxis. Different than Uber Pool or other crowd sourcing services, the key is for the startup to guarantee both short travel times and low prices, even if demand does not initially exist. This can be be done by having better data on the starting and ending points of travelers, which enables us to identify high demand routes and times and thus enable services that have few stops. The fewer stops enable short transit times and the multiple passengers in cars, vans, or mini-buses can reduce costs.

A presentation conducted by Dr Shuaian Wang, School of Mathematics and Applied Statistics, University of Wollongong. Presented on Tuesday the 1st of October 2013 Sydney Harbour Bridge is a key transport infrastructure that connects North Sydney and Sydney Central Business District (CBD). To alleviate the congestion on Sydney Harbour Bridge, NSW Roads and Maritime Services imposes a time of day tolling between $2.5 and $4 on the southbound traffic to Sydney CBD. This study develops mathematical models for formulating the toll pricing problem on Sydney Harbour Bridge considering that different travellers may have different value-of-times (VOTs). The models examine quantitatively the effect of different toll levels on the efficiency (in terms of the total generalized travel time and generalized travel cost of all travellers) and equity (in terms of the ratio of generalized travel cost among different traveller classes). The proposed models can serve as a useful decision-support tool for NSW Roads and Maritime Services.

Transit Oriented Development (TOD) results in the creation of compact, walkable and liveable communities with access to amenities built around high quality mass transit stations. However, the discourse around TODs in India is more of a densification and value capture approach, which is necessary, but yet an incomplete conversation for the Indian context. This webinar, presented by Todd Litman, Himadri Das and Lubaina Rangwala addresses the major challenges and learnings from the ‘implementation’ of a TOD. The webinar recording can be seen here - https://www2.gotomeeting.com/register/335456930 Related Research - http://embarqindiahub.org/reports/towards-walkable-sustainable-bengaluru-accessibility-project-indiranagar-metro-station Related webinar - http://embarqindiahub.org/webinars/parking-effective-tool-manage-travel-demand-transit-oriented-developments

Resumen: In recent decades, the main focus in public transport operations has been increasing its speed. Increasing speed not only allows for faster trips, but also a higher frequency with the same fleet, thus reducing waiting times and crowdedness inside the vehicles. This interest in speed has ignored a second key dimension in level of service: reliability. In this article, we provide a full range of impacts of an unreliable public transport service. We demonstrate how regularising headway could improve level of service beyond the gains of simply increasing the operational speed. Regular headways positively affect comfort, reliability, travel and wait time, operational costs, and even some urban impacts of bus services. Thus, the focus for public transport agencies and operators should be redirected to reliability. This is fundamental for making public transport an attractive travel alternative and therefore must become a core goal for urban sustainability.

Connected and automated trains have been successfully built for decades. And connected and automated cars are promising to become a reality in our streets in the next decade. What about buses? What are the benefits of having buses connected and automated too? This talk will analyse some of these benefits focusing on the prospect of avoiding bus bunching and the impact this may have in the level of service of bus users.

To know the entry time of bus to a bus stop is the fundamental data each travel clients need to know. Sitting tight for quite a while at a bus stop debil itates the individuals to depend upon open transpor ts. In this paper,we display a framework which can forese e the landing time of bus to a specific bus stop considering the ongoing parameters that influences the travel time of transport. With transport module, the ongoing parameters that influence travel time a re persistently gathered and used to foresee the bu s arrival time at different transport stops. A portab le application is created to help the questioning c lients in getting the arrival time of bus to a specific st op. As there will be postpone in travel time becaus e of the vehicles on street, street movement is displaye d utilizing M/G/1 lining hypothesis to ascertain th e delay created by other vehicles going in the same s treet. Server predicts the arrival time on the real time basis by bus module and the data shown in the datab ase of server. Server is coded such that it sends t he anticipated arrival time of transport to the questi oned users wireless at each bus stop it goes till i t achieves the stop questioned by client. Arrival tim e got by clients helps the travel clients to arrang e their schedule and reach the bus stop in time. Such an an ticipating framework propels the non clients of ope n transport frameworks to utilize them and avoid the utilization of private vehicles in their normal lif e.
