POPULATION PROBLEMS IN URBAN
CITIES
Urban cities can be built up according to the requirements of the migrating
population and the municipal corporations can prove helpful about it. Social awareness
of the existing urban population about family planning, employment schemes &
developing their standard of living can be helpful.
The growing population in urban cities due to
migration and its inability to handle it is
becoming a serious threat to the nation’s
development and has become a issue which
needs primary attention.
Development of rural areas by
implementing family planning schemes,
employment programmes can prove helpful
in coping up with migration problems.
Migration in urban cities is mainly caused
due lack of employment opportunities,
population growth and low standard of
living in rural areas.
 New Delhi demands 36 million cubic meters of water per
day. The New Delhi Jal Board supplies just over 30 million
cubic meters per day, but only 17 million cubic meters
actually reaches consumers due to infrastructure problems,
leaking pipes etc.
 This being a more or less common feature in most states of
India ,it can be prevented by taking appropriate steps by
firstly improving present infrastructure ,supply ,storage and
most importantly by spreading awareness.
Need of Developing Sewage Water Treatment Plants
Increasing volumes of domestic, hospital and industrial wastewater are
being produced in several cities in India ..
Even where expensive wastewater treatment plants are installed, only a
small percentage of the total wastewater volume is treated before discharge
resulting in rivers & lakes becoming severely contaminated. Only 4000 of
17,600 MLD waste water generated in India is treated. Approximately 30,000
MLD of pollutants enter India's rivers, 10,000 million liters from industrial
units alone.
Developing the techniques and the qualities of the waste water treatment
plants across the cities in India by implementing modern technology is the
very first essential step which should be taken.
This can be achieved by raising more funds for the waste water
management bringing modern technologies and spreading awareness in the
masses.
 Roads in most of the urban cities are infamous as they are known to last
mostly one single monsoon after they are infested with potholes.
Prevailing reasons are negligence and corruption.
 Concrete roads can be prepared as compared to asphalt as they have more
workability and life as compared to asphalt.
 Related to transportation ,traffic is also a major concern. So to make
transportation as efficient as possible a much more efficient signal system
is a must.
 Road traffic department in every city must be modernized and the
corruption must be stopped to ensure a smooth traffic flow across the
city.
 Construction of flyovers and underground tunnels must be made to
facilitate smooth and hectic less traffic.
The main energy problems in urban cities nowadays is the increasing prices of
fuel, domestic gas and electricity.
Alternatives to this depleting energy sources must be implemented. Renewable
energy sources like solar energy, wind energy etc. are good solutions.
People should be enlightened about saving the energy resources and
programmes for the same should be conducted.
 Below is an illustrated example of implemented alternate energy source in
Germany. Same can be done in urban Indian cities.
 Germany is the world's
top photovoltaics (PV) installer, with a
solar PV capacity of
34.499 gigawatts (GW) at the end of
July 2013.
 The German new solar PV
installations increased by about
7.6 GW in 2012, and solar PV
provided 18 TWh (billion kilowatt-
hours) of electricity.
 Being in a relatively more tropical
zone India receives tremendously
more incident light. Therefore ,the
installation of photovoltaic cells would
be very effective and an important
priority.
The before mentioned points are just a few facets of
existing city infrastructure .Each is equally important
. When all of them are equally improved the city
develops on an all round basis . So if we aim for the
urban development of India , every factor must be
given due attention .
