2. GREEEN METRO
Metro rail network in India is the second largest in south East Asia after Hong Kong.1
With the number of projects existing and in the pipe line it will sooner queue up amongst
the top seven in the world.2
Modern metro introduced to Delhi in 2002 under the supervision of DMRC the capital
city and the second most populous city in India.3
Since then it has witnessed many facelifts on technological front across different cities
making transportation convenient and world class.
From Smart Cards ,automatic smart card recharging machines to mobile apps to google
transit.[4][5]
More than 20 Metro train services are either existing and expanding or under-
construction or in planning.6

3. Problem Statement:-
Metro travelers buying tokens have to wait in long queues
Not all travelers are handy with smart cards
Metro cities with a floating population of 10000 to 5 lakhs commuters need assistance
across different metro rail networks in different cities
Energy of commuters is displaced which can be utilized to generate power across all
stations-cum cities

4. SOLUTION:-
To provide a mobile based application common to all metro rail networks across different
cities (20 inline and more to be proposed projects)
Utilization of Peizo-electric cells to generate power by harnessing the energy generated
by human foot falls on metro station (economic during peak hours)
Conserving Heat energy of passengers and channelizing it to precipitous necessities in
nearby commercial residential complexes (parallel to Paris metro model)
All three solutions propels our cities pan India on the path of becoming future cities

6. Power Generating Floors (Piezo-electric Cells)
Installing Piezo-electric cells to reduce our carbon foot prints
Turning our metro stations into planet-friendly stations
Utilizing conserved energy for lighting or automatic ticket gates in the station.
Piezo Electric floor
Take advantage of piezoelectric principles by harvesting power from footsteps in crowded places
such as train stations, malls, concerts and anywhere where large groups of people move. The key
is the crowd: One footstep can only provide enough electrical current to light two 60-watt bulbs
for one second, but the greater the number of people walking across the piezoelectric floor, the
greater amounts of power produced. It's not beyond the realm of possibility -- approximately
28,500 footsteps generate energy to power a train for one second [source: Christian Science
Monitor]. Imagine what the combined power of commuters' footsteps during rush hour could
do.7
Where Delhi metro single handedly manage 2.26 million commuters every day leave alone
others 8

7. Hypothesis of utilizing body heat of the commuters at the metro station following the Paris
Metro research.
The calories emitted by passengers, around 100 watts per person, combined with the heat from
trains moving along tracks and the underground location of the metro mean that corridor
temperatures are 14-20 degrees Celsius all year around
The project, which is based on geothermal technology, aims to draw heat from subterranean
passages and move it to heat exchangers before supplying heating pipes. The system will
complement district heating.
The project should slash carbon dioxide emissions by a third compared to using a boiler room
connected to district heating, for distributing heat generated in a centralized location for
residential and commercial heating requirements such as space heating and water heating.9
CHALLENGES:-

To provide services for all mobile platforms, “non-smart-phone users” and on all telecom
spectrum
To be able to take on best possible technology (Geo thermal or mobile platforms) for
optimized efficiency
Go for a PPP model to ensure
 Speedy, efficient and cost effective delivery of projects
 Value for money for the taxpayer through optimal risk transfer and risk
management
 Efficiencies from integrating design and construction of public infrastructure with
financing, operation and maintenance/upgrading
 Creation of added value through synergies between public authorities and private
sector companies, in particular, through the integration and cross transfer of
public and private sector skills, knowledge and expertise
