A NALYSIS OF H IGHER E DUCATION IN I NDIA
Higher Education in India is governed by the ministry of Human Resource Development
(MHRD). All the colleges and universities come under the ministry, which has the
mandate to increase the Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) in Higher Education to XX% by
2016-17 and XX% by the year 2020.
UGC and AICTE are the two main regulatory bodies, which regulate university and higher
education, and technical education respectively. There were total of XX recognized
universities, XX colleges, and XX AICTE approved institutions, and XX distance learning
institutions in India at the end of 2011. While XX million students went to universities
and colleges, XX million enrolled for open distance learning in 2011. Further around XX
million students went to AICTE approved colleges.
XX% of all universities in India are the ones, which are run by central and state
governments. Further XX% of all the students are males, with Arts / Humanities being
the most preferred subject, constituting XX% of the enrolment. Arts is followed by
enrolment in Science (XX%) and Commerce / Management (XX%). Around XX% of the
total enrolment is undergraduate courses, while only XX% is in post graduate courses.
Also, around XX% of the students go to university departments and colleges, while
around XX% prefer colleges that are affiliated to universities.
