IFPRI organized a two day workshop on “Agricultural Extension Reforms in South Asia – Status, Challenges, and Policy Options” to be organized at Committee Room 3, NASC, Pusa, New Delhi on February 17-18, 2015. IFPRI has been conducting research related to agricultural extension reforms in India and collaborating with researchers in other south Asian countries for the past five years through various projects. For understanding extension reforms in India, a major consultation was held in NAARM in 2009 during which policy makers called for development of evidence for spreading extension reform process in India. Since then several research papers have been produced on various aspects of Indian extension system. While they are presented in various forms including several discussion papers, there is a need to pull all the research result together to present it in form that could be used by the policy makers to further guide them in the reform process. South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka are going through similar challenges in getting knowledge to farmers. Several experiment shave been conducted to test new approaches to extension by the public, private and NGO sectors. Learning from each country experiences will bring collective understanding and knowledge for the policy makers who are attempting to bring changes in the reform process. The purpose of this workshop is to bring together a groups of researchers, analysts and policy makers to present the issues, constraints and challenges facing agricultural extension reforms that are being implemented in South Asian countries.

Spatial conservation prioritization is about identifying priority areas for biodiversity, as well as the allocation and scheduling of alternative conservation actions to inform decision-making. In other words, spatial conservation prioritization tries to answer the question of where, when, and how we act to efficiently meet conservation goals. Efficiency is an important concept, as possible conservation actions are always limited by available resources. Spatial conservation prioritization can be informative for many different types of conservation action, such as selecting locations most suitable for extending protected area network, targeting restoration and management, or designing broad scale green infrastructure. The term “quantitative” refers to prioritization based on quantitative and spatially explicit data that describes the extent and occurrence of biodiversity features (e.g. species and habitats) and other relevant information (e.g. costs and threats). A prioritization algorithm then does the actual prioritization by ordering the planning units used according to some explicit formulation and the results are usually presented in the form of maps that describe the spatial distribution of priorities over the area of interest. Tools aimed at quantitative spatial conservation prioritization have multiple distinct advantages over non-quantitative approaches. They are able to account for the occurrence of biodiversity over potentially very broad geographical areas. For example, when working with species on local level, it is important to account for the occurrence of that species elsewhere. When designing new protected areas, it is similarly important to know what is already protected. Ecological connectivity is yet another factor that is not easy to account for in conventional planning. Expert-based and quantitative approaches are not, however, mutually exclusive. Expert input is always needed to make use of quantitative spatial conservation planning tools. In this short seminar, we will cover the basics and some available tools for spatial conservation prioritization. We will also go through the most typical stages of a spatial conservation prioritization project using a specific tool, Zonation, as an example. Zonation is a tool for balancing the requirements of many features, such as biodiversity or ecosystem services features, simultaneously in ecologically informed land use planning. In addition to conservation prioritization, Zonation is suited also for general land use planning and resource allocation. We will go through multiple real-life example projects in which Zonation has been used as a decision-support tool. We will also discuss different sources of data needed, as well as typical resources needed to run a prioritization project using Zonation. This seminar should give the attendees a basic understanding what spatial conservation prioritization is useful for.

In the last five years, the term green roof has taken on ecological and social significance beyond its seemingly simplistic description, this term has become an epithet for the reduction of pollution and improving urban environment, for large scale mitigation of storm water runoff, and for maximum utilization of urban land. Erbil the capital city of Kurdistan region is facing a lot of environmental problems such as waste water treatment, water supply, land preservation, air and noise pollution due to the increasing number of cars, in addition, interestingly recent statistics suggested that the percentage of green areas in Erbil is approximately 6.5%, while according to international standards 30% of urban areas should be green. Green roofs infrastructure on the other hand promises to become an increasingly important solution for building owners and community planners which provides a significant numbers of social, environmental and economic benefits that are both public and private nature. Research problem is the ambiguity of green roofs implementation techniques in the region and the goal is initiated to determine the obstacle and challenges of green roofs implementations in Erbil city as case field by analyzing international experiences and concluding Erbil’s green roofs criteria.

'Discussion support’ systems in agriculture are processes which foster discussion between stakeholders about shared issues of concern and may lead to awareness raising, learning, skill development and decision making. The rationale for testing a web-based simulated discussion approach is supported in the current information delivery and extension environment where declining funding and policy support is stimulating the search for alternative delivery methods for tools and information in agriculture. This project will test and evaluate a product (web based Second Life Machinima conversations) that can be used in a range of situations and that are accessible in remote environments, without the need for technical experts or other service providers to be physically present in a discussion.

From 27-29 October 2014, WLE, in cooperation with the CGIAR Systemwide Program on Collective Action and Property Rights (CAPRI) and the CGIAR Research Program on Forests, Trees, and Agroforestry (FTA), held a workshop on Institutions for Ecosystems Services in Washington DC. The goals of the workshop were to: -Encourage sharing and discussion on research methods and tools to study the links between institutions and ecosystem services -Synthesize lessons about institutional arrangements needed to ensure that ecosystem services projects are able to deliver benefits to local resource users and produce local, regional, and national global environmental benefits -Identify policies and program interventions that can strengthen these institutions -Outline priorities for future research, policy, and project implementation, particularly of relevance for PIM, WLE, and FTA programs
