Running head: ONLINE EDUCATION 1 ONLINE EDUCATION 6 Online Education Jane Doe Option 3: Traditional Paper Grantham University Abstract Online education has made vast improvements since the Internet was created. Before the Internet, schools were using various forms of technology to teach classes from a distance. Distance learning ranged from using the United States Post Office to mail assignments to using radio, television, and telephone. In this paper I will discuss how online education is advancing and becoming more competitive with traditional “brick and mortar” schools. Distance education has evolved tremendously over the past 100 years. Correspondence schools were developed in the late 1800s to allow students to go to school from far distances. The 1900s were full of improvements that allowed schools to offer classes through radio, television, and telephone. One of the most monumental advances in online education was the creation of the Internet. Schools started to use the Internet to their advantage in 1981 (Miller, 2014). From this time period, schools have quickly adopted this form of education to teach their students. Online education has given some students the opportunity to earn an education who may not have previously been able to do so. There are many universities that offer full online degree programs. Students are able to continue their daily lives and still earn a degree at any age. Online classes offer flexibility which is a huge benefit to students with full-time jobs, children, or those who are in the military. Often times, online universities have more affordable tuition compared to traditional schools. In a society where education is vital and yearly tuition increases, affordability can be a deciding factor for students when choosing their educational future. Many online programs offer “hybrid” or “blended” courses. These are courses that have a mixture of students in-class and online (Hiltz and Turoff, 2005). These blended courses allow instructors to use effective teaching methods to provide the same educational experience for both types of students. The use of technology has allowed instructors to interact with online students in very helpful ways. Many management systems, such as BlackBoard, allow instructors to post videos, announcements, discussions, and detailed feedback to educate their students. In an article by Hiltz and Turoff (2005) discussing the evolution of online learning, they state: There is no need for the instructor or student in a blended course to be concerned with which students attend the face-to-face class and which students participate online. All learning experiences are also available in a digital form that is at least equally effective. This quote illustrates that online courses have just as much quality as face-to-face courses offered at a traditional school. Online education has been a growing trend which has caused an increase.

1 Social Media and Education Class Objectives • To provide an overview of the use of social media in educational institutions • To explore how social media is used to advance education Introduction The internet has opened up spaces for individuals from different parts of the world, generations, class, gender and race to gain access to higher education. These forms of “borderless” learning platforms allow professors to facilitate linear interactions with students as students take charge of their learning by posing questions and posting content virtually. The popularity of online courses is demonstrated by a study conducted by the learningSloan Foundation study consisting of more than 2,500 colleges and universities. The study findings indicated that online enrolments were growing substantially faster than overall higher education enrolment, and the 17% growth rate in online enrolments far exceeds the 1.2% growth rate in the overall higher education population (Allen & Seaman, 2010, cited in LeNoue, Hall, Eighmy, 2011, pp. 4-5). Allen and Seaman classified an online course as one in which more than 80% of content is delivered online and reported that over 4.6 million students were taking such courses during the fall 2008 term (p.5). Clearly, online courses are becoming a preferred means of learning mainly because of their convenience—students are able to navigate, full time employment, family responsibilities and other commitments. Many online instructional settings utilize content management systems that allow for a two way communication between students and the professor. The forums deviate from lecture structures and professors in the online context as seen as facilitators of knowledge encouraging active and experiential learning and teamwork to enhance cooperation and collaboration. Would you categorize the online classes provided by UCW as a social media forum? Beyond online classrooms, universities use social media mainly for marketing, communication and alumni relations. Universities now combine the use of social media with their own homepages as a recruitment tools (For example, last year UCW’s homepage provided access to Facebook, Twitter and YouTube). Universities are also using social media to reach out to their alumni. A 2012 survey by the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (an association of university and college professionals in development, alumni affairs and communications) shows that 83 percent of U.S. colleges and universities are using social media to engage alumni, with 96 percent on Facebook, 80 percent on Twitter, 73 percent on YouTube, and 68 percent on LinkedIn (Frank, 2013). These statistics give an illustration of how social media are used for communication between universities and the public. http://www.case.org/Samples_Research_and_Tools/Benchmarking_and_Research/Surveys_and_Studies/Social_Media_Survey.html 2 Social media has also gained ...

The social networking sites have brought a new horizon for expressing views and opinions of individuals. Moreover, they provide medium to students to share their sentiments including struggles and joy during the learning process. Such informal information has a great venue for decision making. The large and growing scale of information needs automatic classification techniques. Sentiment analysis is one of the automated techniques to classify large data. The existing predictive sentiment analysis techniques are highly used to classify reviews on E-commerce sites to provide business intelligence. However, they are not much useful to draw decisions in education system since they classify the sentiments into merely three pre-set categories: positive, negative and neutral. Moreover, classifying the students’ sentiments into positive or negative category does not provide deeper insight into their problems and perks. In this paper, we propose a novel Hybrid Classification Algorithm to classify engineering students’ sentiments. Unlike traditional predictive sentiment analysis techniques, the proposed algorithm makes sentiment analysis process descriptive. Moreover, it classifies engineering students’ perks in addition to problems into several categories to help future students and education system in decision making.

The increasing role of social media has been recognized as an increasingly effective marketing tool for a broad section of enterprises. This paper highlights the first stage of the engagement strategy using social media for an academic laboratory, and provides an insight for others wishing to take advantage of the various social networking tools that are available. The lab engages with different constituencies such as students, faculty, and alumni, industrial and governmental agencies. As these constituents online presence is fragmented over a number of different social websites (Twitter™, LinkedIn™ for example), there is no longer an effective single point of contact to engage them. With that in mind, researchers in the lab created accounts on, and started using Twitter™, LinkedIn™ and SlideShare™. Data about site referrals to the BSPA Laboratory’s homepage was gathered using Google Analytics™, in order to analyze the effects (if any) that social networks might have in promotional activities and increased interaction with the BSPA Laboratory home page (http://www.bspalabs.org/). Although this paper is a preliminary report on a short term progress, the data shows the differences in unique visitors before and after becoming active in social networks and will show data linking specific social network with an effect.

Education is a basic need for every human being and digital education is the current trend and necessity for every students or learners to be more focused in their learning. In this paper authors worked with these current phenomena. Digital education helps students or learners to gather knowledge in easier and different ways than before. It also reduces the learning time. In traditional education system we were mostly dependent on text book or in instructor’s speech. But nowadays it is easier to find any text book or any other learning materials by using digital educational tools. Another charismatic change that transformed human life is social networking. In terms of digital education social networks contribute a good portion of education. Among social networking services, Facebook has become most popular for communication with familiar and unfamiliar persons. The impact of the use of Facebook on students is very impactful. In this paper authors conducted a survey on various students for understanding the digitalization effect on educational purpose. Machine learning was applied for classified the happy and unhappy student with digitalization where focused time spent on educational purposes. Finally authors provided an analytical summary of digitalization effect on education based on their survey.

Facebook application is already pre-loaded in any smartphone, making it a typical conversation mode almost anytime and anywhere. Its unique feature called "Facebook group" allows anyone to post images, documents, pdf files, PowerPoint presentations, and video clips. Even polls can also be posted where members of the group can simply click their response to a given poll question. Indeed, the Facebook group is already utilized by almost any organization.
