“Our shareholders are not happy, because our stock price is dropping. We’ve
got to find a way to increase revenue”
“If we don’t show a rise in revenue, by the end of this quarter, we may face
restructuring, some of our branches could be closed down & we may even have to let
some people go.”
“But, if we deliver on our promise to shareholders, we will be credited with turning this
situation around, we will gain senior management’s trust and support and the budget
we requested will be approved.”
Throughout human history, the people who have distinguished themselves as great leaders, from great innovators to great social catalysts to great military generals, came in all shapes and sizes.
Some were tall and dashing, others were short and stocky. Some were great & charismatic speakers, while others were shy and maybe even timid. All of them experienced great failures before they got a taste of success. Every single person, whom we may call a great leader today, was one day simply a person like you and me, a person trying to do the best they can and sometimes even doubting if what they were doing was ever going to succeed.
I know that looking at their accomplishments in hind sight, we can easily be tricked into thinking that these people were born great. That somehow from the very first day, there must have been something special about them, that made them destined to become great leaders. But the truth is those people were not born that way, they became great as they struggled with challenge. And so can you.
Unfortunately when we read about those great leaders and their accomplishments, we’re often encouraged to scrutinize their personalities. Most biographies of great leaders focus on the person rather than the actions through amazing stories that can develop into legends. But you know who would dispute those legends? Those same leaders we admire. So the first step for you to develop great leadership skills, is to adopt that fundamental belief. Great leaders are made, not born.
