- IFMA’s CFM certification process is designed to assess competency in the field through work experience, education and the ability to pass a comprehensive exam. Since the program began in 1992, more than 3,300 facility managers from 25 countries have achieved this prestigious recognition. Once achieved CFM’s are required to recertify every three years. The recertification process keeps CFM’s on top of their game by offering points towards recertification for attending conferences, volunteering in FM Research, participating in their local chapter and many other activities that promote and grow the profession. The CFM Competency Framework was developed based on the three core responsibilities of a facility manager. These are Advancing the Business, Leading the Organization and of course Managing the Facility.
- Facility management master’s or bachelor’s degree from an IFMA recognized program /3 years experience Related bachelor’s degree/ 4 years experience Non-related bachelor’s degree or associate’s degree / 5 years experience Some post-secondary education / 8 years experience All categories require some form of continuing education within the past five years. Once you have verified eligibility to become a CFM, you may complete the application process. Applications can be found on the IFMA web-site and the cost is $525 for IFMA members and $775 for non-members. the best first step is to review the Complete List of Competencies and make an honest assessment of your knowledge and experience in each of the competencies and performances.
