Case Study
IBM Systems and Technology Group Computer Services
Founded in 1999 and based in Amiens, France, TZM Informatique
(TZM) is an IT and communications services company. The company
has particular expertise in the medical sector, for which it produces a
number of specialized integrated applications for enterprise resource
planning, financial accounting, payroll management, appointment
planning and more. TZM also provides high-quality hosting and
disaster recovery services both for its medical-sector clients and for
clients in other industries. In addition, the company is building a
unique network of professional partners in the domain of enterprise
risk management, called MAGERISK.
A key challenge for many small and mid-sized companies is the backup
and recovery of business data and systems. Nicolas Mochez, Managing
Director of TZM, comments, “In our experience, most smaller
businesses do not have effective disaster-recovery measures in place,
and even those companies that have some kind of solution tend to find
that they are not well protected when something actually goes wrong.
TZM decided to provide a cloud-based managed service for backup
and recovery, enabling small and mid-sized businesses to benefit from
high-end IBM technology and our own expertise.”
End-to-end service
By combining IBM Storwize V7000 virtualized disk storage and IBM
Tivoli Storage Manager software, TZM has created an enterprise-class
backup and recovery service within the financial reach of small and
mid-sized businesses. Crucially, TZM uses the IBM technologies to
offer a fully managed service for backing up its customers’ data and
systems, and for providing expert recovery services in the event of a
disaster.
TZM installs Tivoli Storage Manager agents on its customers’ servers
and workstations, then provides an end-to-end service that assures
full protection for all data. Customers can employ a user-friendly web
interface to restore earlier versions of their files or to recover items that
have been accidentally deleted.
TZM provides enterprise-
class backup and
recovery for all
Bringing advanced IBM solutions within the financial
reach of small businesses
Overview
The need
TZM wanted to offer a fully managed,
cloud-based backup and disaster
recovery service for business data and
applications – and to make this affordable
even for small businesses.
The solution
Deployed an IBM® Storwize® V7000 with
IBM FastBack for Storwize V7000 and
IBM Tivoli® Storage Manager software.
TZM offers both on-site physical recovery
and off-site virtual recovery services.
The benefit
Makes enterprise-class backup a
financially viable option for smaller
businesses; cuts management costs,
enabling attractive pricing; offers lower
TCO with ten times the performance of
previous storage.
Case Study
IBM Systems and Technology Group Computer Services
Where an entire system fails, TZM can provide an on-site service to
restore data from the off-site backup within a contractually guaranteed
period – typically, just a few hours. Alternatively – and many customers
choose both options – TZM can provide full recovery on a virtual
server in its own data center. This second option means that customers
can be up and running within a few hours of a complete disaster, such
as a major fire in their own data center.
“Most – if not all – businesses have some kind of backup for their
data, but it is rare to find smaller businesses with well-formulated and
regularly tested plans for actually recovering from a disaster,” says
Nicolas Mochez. “Properly speaking, the goal should not be to have a
backup of data, but to have the guaranteed ability to use that backed-up
data to recover from an outage. With a shared platform based on IBM
Storwize V7000 and IBM Tivoli Storage Manager, combined with our
expertise in disaster recovery, we have created a zero-effort solution
that offers our customers genuine business resilience.”
Powerful features
TZM worked with Best’Ware, an IBM Premier Business Partner, to
select and deploy an IBM Storwize V7000 virtualized storage system,
currently with 15 TB capacity. The V7000 includes easy management
tools and advanced features such as thin-provisioning and storage
tiering as standard.
“The IBM Storwize V7000 storage system includes features that you
would expect to find only in an enterprise system, yet the price of the
solution was low enough to enable us to attack the entry-level market,”
says Nicolas Mochez. “The monitoring tools are powerful but not
complicated, and built-in thin-provisioning enables us to optimize the
use of capacity and delay new investments.”
Using the external virtualization capabilities of its Storwize V7000,
TZM was able to redeploy an older storage system as a second tier of
storage, all managed using the same tools. In the future, TZM may
choose to add high-speed solid-state drives (SSDs) to the Storwize, and
will be able to use the built-in Easy Tier® software to automatically
migrate the most frequently accessed data from the lower tier of disks.
“One of the great things about the Storwize V7000 is its scalability,”
says Nicolas Mochez. “If the business grows - no problem, I add some
capacity, it’s all in the same management system, it’s reliable, and it’s
redundant.”

With IBM FastBack for Storwize V7000, TZM also has an easy-to-use
deduplication solution that will allow it to shrink the amount of disk
space it requires by storing just a single copy of duplicate files or data.
“Thin-provisioning and deduplication are features that help us to
achieve the economies of scale that make it financially viable for even
our smallest customers to invest in our enterprise-class backup service.”
Faster and less costly
“When we designed our cloud-based backup and recovery service, we
started from the principle that we needed an offer that was as easy to
understand as a monthly phone contract, and priced low enough to be
attractive even to the smallest businesses,” says Nicolas Mochez. “The
combination of IBM Storwize V7000 and Tivoli Storage Manager has
played a big part in enabling us to achieve these goals. The total cost of
ownership for the V7000 is lower than for our previous storage system,
and yet the new solution is seven to ten times faster.”
The ease of management offered by the V7000 enables TZM to focus
less on the technology and more on the business of supporting its
customers. It also means reduced internal costs, which enables the
company to offer highly competitive pricing for its services.
“We pride ourselves on offering high levels of service at affordable
prices, and with a real focus on our customers’ business needs,” says
Nicolas Mochez. “By making it easy to share storage resources between
multiple customers, the IBM solution is a key enabler for the whole
service.”
