1. What is Health and Biomedical Informatics?
Health and biomedical informatics is the body of knowledge that concerns the acquisition, storage,
retrieval and use of information in, about and for human health, and the design and management of
related information systems to advance the understanding and practice of healthcare.
Health and Biomedical Informatics at the University of Melbourne
The University of Melbourne’s Health and Biomedical Informatics Research Unit is based in the Faculty of
Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and located in Melbourne’s Parkville Precinct, a major centre for
healthcare and biomedical research.
Unit staff are multidisciplinary, with a wide range of research and teaching experience in Medicine, Bio-
medical Multimedia, eHealth and Telehealth, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information and
Communication Technology, and eLearning.
The Unit works closely with researchers and clinicians from all areas of the Faculty, with the University’s
Institute for a Broadband Enabled Society and Departments of Information Systems, Computer Science
and Software Engineering, and with a growing number of academic and industry partners

application of expert knowledge about information and communication technologies for healthcare and
