A brain tumor is an abnormal growth of cells within the
brain, which can be cancerous or non-cancerous (benign).
It is defined as any intracranial tumor created by abnormal
and uncontrolled cell division, normally either in the brain
itself (neurons, glial cells (astrocytes, oligodendrocytes,
ependymal cells), lymphatic blood vessels), in the cranial
nerves (myelin-producing Schwann cells), in the brain
envelopes (meninges), skull, pituitary and pineal gland, or
spread from cancers primarily located in other organs
(metastatic tumors).
Primary (true) brain tumors are commonly located in the posterior cranial fossa in children
and in the anterior two-thirds of the cerebral hemispheres in adults, although they can affect
any part of the brain.

Not all brain tumors cause symptoms, and some (such as tumors of the pituitary gland) are
found mainly after death. The symptoms of brain cancer are numerous and not specific to brain
tumors, meaning they can be caused by many other illnesses as well. The only way to know for
sure what is causing the symptoms is to undergo diagnostic testing. Symptoms can be caused
by:
A tumor pressing on or encroaching on other parts of your brain and keeping
them from functioning normally.
Swelling in the brain caused by the tumor or surrounding inflammation.
The symptoms of primary and metastatic brain cancers are similar.
The following symptoms are most common:
Headache
Weakness
Clumsiness
Difficulty walking
Seizures
Other nonspecific symptoms and signs include the following:
Altered mental status -- changes in concentration, memory, attention, or alertness
Nausea, vomiting -- especially early in the morning
Abnormalities in vision
Difficulty with speech

There are two main types of brain tumors:
Benign Brain Tumors – A benign brain tumor consists of cells
that grow slowly and do not spread to other areas of the brain or
body. They have distinct boundaries. Surgery alone may cure this
type of tumor.
Malignant Brain Tumors – A malignant brain tumor is life-
threatening. It may be malignant because it consists of cancer cells,
or it may be called malignant because of its location. In other
words, a brain tumor composed of benign cells—but located in a
vital area—may behave in a malignant fashion. A malignant brain
tumor made up of cancerous cells can invade and destroy healthy
tissue so these areas cannot function properly.
Common, specific types of brain tumors include:
1. Astrocytomas
2. Meningiomas
3. Pituitary gland tumors
4. Metastatic brain tumors

Treatment for Brain Cancer at World Class Hospitals
in India
Surgery : Surgery is often the first treatment if the tumour can be
removed without causing harm to the surrounding brain tissue.
Treatment of brain cancer is usually complex. Most treatment plans
involve several consulting doctors. The team of doctors includes
neurosurgeons, oncologists, radiation oncologists, and of course,
your primary health-care provider. A patient's team may include a
dietitian, a social worker, a physical therapist, and probably other
specialists.
Chemotherapy : Chemotherapy is not used to treat all brain
tumours. It may be used for people with high-grade primary brain
tumours, either as an initial treatment alongside radiotherapy, or
where the tumour has come back.
Radiation therapy : Radiation therapy (also called radiotherapy)
is the use of high-energy rays to kills tumor cells, thereby stopping
them from growing and multiplying.Radiation therapy may be used
for people who cannot undergo surgery. In other cases, it is used
after surgery to kill any tumor calls that may remain. Radiation
therapy is a local therapy.

It is the most advanced Neuro-Surgical Operating Room with
high field MR. This system permits the neurosurgeon to have
an MRI study on the patient during surgery, and if tumor has
remained which was hidden to the human eye, can be
detected by special MRI sequences, and can be targeted using
neuro navigation (which works on the same principle as the
GPS system).
The Brain Suite has two main parts. There is a high-intensity MRI scanner integrated with
an image-guided surgical system. The MRI scanner has a wide-bore opening allowing a
patient to lie on his or her side. Previously, tumors that could only be accessed from the side
of the skull were not easy to scan. This special MRI system lets doctors repeat scans during
the operation to get more accurate information on the location, shape and size of the tumor.
This minimizes problems associated with brain tumors shifting during excision.
