Namaste and Greetings to all distinguished guests, dignitaries and delegates of this “1st Australian Hindu Youth Conference”. I am here to talk to you about about HINDUS and HINDU YOUTH AUSTRALIANS.
Hinduism is not just a religion. Not just a way of life. It is Dharma, best called the Hindu Dharma.The word dharma is very profound and you cannot do justice to this word by describing it like other words in the English dictionary. This word is best known as Hindu Dharma and this is how we would like Hinduism to be addressed. This Hindu dharma represents Dharmic, Cultural, social, and ethnic cohesiveness. It portrays an ancient history of many millennia and constitutes all the living, flourishing and surviving from the sacred land of BHARAT MATA (Mother India) and all over the world.In modern English language, any word that can come even slightly close to expressing this Hindu identity is the word “civilization”. Therefore, the Hindu identity is a civilizational identity.All of our ancestors have used the word Hindu Dharma such as Great Maharanapratap Chatrapathi Shivaji. They never use the word hinduism!! This word has just recently come about!
This one word Hindu is so profound that it is almost undefinable. The word Hindu represents the entire land mass from oceans to the Himalayas;
It details the surroundings from north-to-west by the Indus River (in sanskrit sindhu river) and north-to-east by Brahmaputra river (in ancient sanskrit sindhu river) and south-to-west and south-to-east surrounded by Indian OCEAN (Sindhu-samudra)The word sindu was then transformed into “Hindu” through Sanskrit grammar and found its profound use through many of the ancient vedic texts and books. One of them is Rig Veda which is the world’s oldest written text.

This graph shows arrival of Hindus from 2000 to 2005From 2000 to 2005, there has been a significant increase in the arrival of Hindus to Australia.Since these figures are from the 2006 census, we can only assume based on this trend, the arrival numbers have increased beyond the 2005 value. So with the increasing number of arrival of Hindus to Australia, there is a need to integrate the Australian and Hindu culture. Youth are the future of Australia! Hence, there is a need for Australian Hindu Youths to promote Dharmic activities in their local areas.“Hindu Youth Australia (HYA) which was formed April last year, has started fulfilling this objective on a small scale. However, to sustain this and reach out to a larger number of young people we need support from the local government, communities and youth development agencies”We acknowledge and appreciate the support of the Diverse Australia Small Grants Program (Federal Department of Immigration) and NSW Government Community Relations Commission.
Observing this graph….we see the majority of Hindu Youth Australians lying in the 20-29 years and 30-39 years age portfolio. And this is the most productive age group!!And in comparison to the global numbers, approximately 70% of Hindus around the world are less than 50. So, around the globe Hindus are pretty youthful!!!

This slide captures the educational qualifications of Hindu Australians from the 2006 Census data conducted by the ABS. As you can see there is a large bulk of Hindu Australians who have completed tertiary level education i.e. 20% have postgraduate degrees, 33% have undergrad degrees, 12% diplomas. And the rest are in High School, Primary School & below.So, Hindus and subsequently Australian Hindus in general have substantially high educational qualifications. Furthermore on a percentage scale, Hindus are 3 and 9 folds higher in graduate and post graduate degrees respectively.
Income wise, Hindu Australians have high weekly median incomes compared to all other religions. This is both at an individual and household level. As a result, Australian Hindus are contributing a greater amount of wealth & circulating back into the Australian economy. How?The average weekly spending for Australian Hindus will be higherPurchasing of Investments i.e. Property & shares etc.Repayment of loans from Mortgage, Financial debts, tax etc.Greater contribution towards Dharmic and charitable/community events
