It’s hard to find a business that doesn’t prize word-of-mouth. However, many organizations don’t fully realize the extent to which word-of-mouth is now on the web.
As customers prowl store aisles, they use their smart phones to check your products and prices against competitors. When someone needs a product, they are just as likely to go look online as they is to ask a friend about it. Before hiring just about anyone, a potential customer will research them by perusing their website, blogs and any other information they can uncover via the net.
This initial guide focuses on the foundation of your digital presence, an effective website. In rapid succession, creating a web presence has shifted from a nice-to-have, to a crucial task, to the fundamental way businesses of all size interact with customers and potential customers. To get started, let's take a look at our “Setting up a Website” presentation which will help you set up a web hosting account, secure a domain and build a website utilizing WordPress.
If you have any questions or would like some more information on anything that we’ve discussed in this packet or in our presentations, please don’t hesitate to contact us. And of course, if you need a hand with your Digital Strategy, we’ll be happy to assist you…

4. What is a Domain Name?
First off, what is a Domain??
A domain name is a name that you‟ll use to name your
website. The domain name could also be used to identify
each page in your website, for example,
www.yoursite.com/index.html. This page is showing the main
page of your website, and your domain name is
www.yoursite.com.
To get a domain name, you‟ll need to register it with a domain
name service registrar which we‟re going to go over in a bit.
Please note that there are no two domain names that have the
same words or numbers. It‟s because each domain name is
unique, and if there is already a person register the domain
name “www.mysite.com”, you can‟t buy the same name.

5. Setting up a website
(domain)
You‟ll need to first determine which company you are
going to use to actually host your site. What I mean by
this is you need a place to actually store all of your files
that will make your website accessible to the Internet.
This company will provide you space on their servers to
store all of your information and the better providers
will provide you with many tools to help you secure a
domain name, build websites, create email addresses,
analyze web traffic and many other tools.

We now need to choose a domain name. This is going to
be your actual website address which you‟re going to
build your website from.
There are many sites which allow you to purchase a
domain name (Domain, HostGator, Go Daddy,
NameCheap, etc) and they normally run anywhere from
$5 to $20 a year.
For this example, we‟re going to stick with HostGator‟s
domain service which actually is run through Registry

11. Choosing a Domain
We now need to choose a unique name that we‟re going
to use to promote our business or organization.
You may have to try and few different names and
variations and you may also find that the “.com” is not
available and you may only be able to get a different
extension like “.net”, “.us”, or one of the many other
extensions.

12. Choosing a Domain
Now that you have found a Domain name that you’re
satisfied with, you can purchase it by clicking on the

Now that your new email address is set up, where do the emails
go and how do I get to them??
You can either use the webmail providers that HostGator offers or
I have found it much easier to just forward your newly
created emails to a Google Gmail account and then set up your
Google Gmail account to send and receive emails from the newly
created email address. No one is the wiser because the emails
appear to be sent from the newly created email address and you
have the ease and functionality of Gmail!
