What is a Domain Name?
First off, what is a Domain??
A domain name is a name that you‟ll use to name your
website. The domain name could also be used to identify
each page in your website, for example,
www.yoursite.com/index.html. This page is showing the main
page of your website, and your domain name is
         www.yoursite.com.
To get a domain name, you‟ll need to register it with a domain
name service registrar which we‟re going to go over in a bit.
Please note that there are no two domain names that have the
same words or numbers. It‟s because each domain name is
unique, and if there is already a person register the domain
name “www.mysite.com”, you can‟t buy the same name.

Setting up a website
                                (domain)
You‟ll need to first determine which company you are
going to use to actually host your site. What I mean by
this is you need a place to actually store all of your files
that will make your website accessible to the Internet.

This company will provide you space on their servers to
store all of your information and the better providers
will provide you with many tools to help you secure a
domain name, build websites, create email addresses,
analyze web traffic and many other tools.

Now you need a Domain
We now need to choose a domain name. This is going to
be your actual website address which you‟re going to
               build your website from.

There are many sites which allow you to purchase a
domain name (Domain, HostGator, Go Daddy,
NameCheap, etc) and they normally run anywhere from
               $5 to $20 a year.

For this example, we‟re going to stick with HostGator‟s
domain service which actually is run through Registry
Enter your desired domain name in the area
Rocket. see if it‟s available. This will
                highlighted to

Choosing a Domain
We now need to choose a unique name that we‟re going
to use to promote our business or organization.

You may have to try and few different names and
variations and you may also find that the “.com” is not
available and you may only be able to get a different
extension like “.net”, “.us”, or one of the many other
               extensions.

Updating the DNS Info (1)
We now have to make sure that that the Domain Name that we
purchased will connect back to our Host Gator Account and we do
this by updating the “DNS Information, Domain Name Server 1 &
Domain Name Server 2” which directs the domain name to our
    hosting account.
First – We have to determine what are HostGator Name Servers are. These will be
specific to your HostGator account. You will find this information on the lower left
corner of your Cpanel Screen under “Account Information”.

FTP – What is this??
Some templates and other programs may require you to utilize an
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to upload the required data to your
HostGator Account. There are a handful of free programs that
you can use for both Mac and Windows and I‟ve provided two
examples of services I‟ve used in the past. Click on them to see a
video that explains video in further detail.

Setting up your email (1)
One of the biggest advantages of having your own Domain
is that you can now have your own personalized email
addresses and you can set up as many as you need!!

First – Let‟s go back into the
       HostGator Cpanel and find
       the “Mail” category and click
       on “Email Addresses”

Setting up your email (2)
After clicking on “Email Accounts” we will be brought to the set up
screen where we can easily set up a new email address for any
    domain that you have.

    Choose the domain you
    would like to create an
    email address for and
    then complete the rest of
    the boxes and you‟ll be
    good to go!

Setting up your email (3)
Now that your new email address is set up, where do the emails
go and how do I get to them??
You can either use the webmail providers that HostGator offers or
I have found it much easier to just forward your newly
created emails to a Google Gmail account and then set up your
Google Gmail account to send and receive emails from the newly
created email address. No one is the wiser because the emails
appear to be sent from the newly created email address and you
have the ease and functionality of Gmail!
Click on the picture to watch a
video of how to set this up!!

Now that you have a Web Hosting Account, you can
               add multiple domains to it.

               • We are going to follow steps previously mentioned,
though we have to add one more after you update the
DNS (Domain Name Servers) in step 4.

               Open up your HostGator
               Cpanel and go to the
               “Domains” section and click

Redirecting a Domain (1)
Sometimes you may find yourself with a main Domain
and you would like other websites to direct to it
when a user types in specific name.
You can go ahead and purchase as many Domain names
as you would like and have them all direct to a specific
               domain name.

                 Open up your HostGator
                 Cpanel and go to the
                 “Domains” section. The click
                 on “Redirects”…

Redirecting a Domain (2)

             Now that you‟re in
             the “Redirect”
             section, just fill in
             the requested info
             and you‟ll be good
             to go.

  • 4. What is a Domain Name? First off, what is a Domain?? A domain name is a name that you‟ll use to name your website. The domain name could also be used to identify each page in your website, for example, www.yoursite.com/index.html. This page is showing the main page of your website, and your domain name is www.yoursite.com. To get a domain name, you‟ll need to register it with a domain name service registrar which we‟re going to go over in a bit. Please note that there are no two domain names that have the same words or numbers. It‟s because each domain name is unique, and if there is already a person register the domain name “www.mysite.com”, you can‟t buy the same name.
