Lakota Foods
The Lower Brule Sioux Indian Tribe of South Dakota was
trying to cope with their vast unemployment rate. Lakota
Foods was established to help build the tribe’s economy and
is 100% owned by the tribe. The popcorn is grown on the
fertile lands of the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe where the farm
land is mostly devoted to
popcorn. The manufacturing
plant is also located on the
land and helps to employ
many tribe members. Lakota’s
popcorn is grown and sold to
many major popcorn compa-
nies in the U.S.
“Our goal is to find any way possible to get more popcorn
out the door, which means more jobs, more stability for the
community of Lower Brule,” said Lee Brannon, General
Manager for the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe.
Lakota Foods is the first and only Native American owned
and operated organization which produces, processes, pack-
ages, and markets popcorn.
“We are different than a lot of popcorn companies because
our whole purpose is to create jobs,” said Pat Kerwin, Lakota
Foods Plant Manager.
