Designing a solar oven

Imagine for design #1
Idea #1
Our materials are shredded foam on the bottom, shredded
felt on two sides, shredded cotton on the other two sides.
We need one unit from every material.
The advantage of this idea is that most of our materials are
very good insulators, and they have little impact, therefore
giving us a low environmental impact score.
The disadvantage of this idea is that our foam has a big
environmental impact, giving us a high impact score.

Idea#2
Our materials are shredded cloth on two sides, shredded felt on
the bottom, and shredded white foam on the other two sides.
We need one unit from each of the material.
The advantage of this idea is that these materials are good
insulators and they have little environmental impact
The disadvantage of this idea is that we would have preferred to
have three different materials than these but the ones that we
wanted had too much environmental impact so we chose these
instead.

Create for design #1
Our heat score is our solar oven maximum
temperature subtracted from the control oven:
66°C–55°C = 11°C.
Our time score is the number of minutes it took
to cool down which was 4 minutes.
Our total impact score was 8 points.
Our total score for the solar oven is 7 points.

Improve for design #1
The total score for our first solar oven was 7 points.
The parts of our solar oven design that worked well were
our insulators because they trapped in the heat very well.
The parts of our solar oven that did not work well was the
plastic covering because it would always fall off the hole.
We are going to try to improve our heat and impact score.
We will improve our heat and impact score by using
different insulators that don't have a lot of impact. Can
also use darker materials because they trap in heat better.

Reflection
Our improved design did not work well because our score
was low and we do not want a low score. The materials we
changed were using newspaper and cotton instead of felt
and foam as insulators. We changed our insulators hoping
to get a lower impact score on the environment. The
materials were poor insulators because in our first design
our solar oven temperature went up in the 60's but in our
second design the temperature only went up to the 40's.
If we could improve again we would find even better
insulators than the ones on the first design because then we
might go up above the 60's and we would get a higher total
score.
