•  Green-IT also comprises managerial aspects to control and
monitor the effectiveness of implemented measures as well as
marketing measures to communicate the success towards
important stakeholders (Erek et al. 2009).
•  These measures can be structured regarding their strategic,
operational and technical impact and along the IT activity chain
of IT departments covering a source, make (data center, office
environment), deliver and return process (Schmidt et al. 2009;
Molla 2008).
•  Green-IT is a systematic application of environmental
sustainability criteria to the design, production, sourcing, use,
and disposal of the IT infrastructure in order to reduce IT,
business process, and supply chain related emissions and waste
and improve energy efficiency (Molla et al. 2009).

Green’ing a FW
•  Prepare to change by identifying the
right stakeholders
(out of usual IT domain of influence)
–  Helps interviewing the right persons
for accurate assessment;
–  Helps in identifying the right pain-
killers;
–  Helps identify the right persons for
communicating initiatives and manage
changes.

Discrepencies
•  Non-IT scores lower than IT
•  Efficient IT, and hence quite green without knowing
•  Little understanding from non-IT’ers about what IT actually

  1. Compare 2 – 3 % w/ aviation !!Only accounting for Energy consumption.!! Scarce resourcesCO2 can be discussed; but is surely aligned with financial aspects (energy consumption) Hard to compare with impact on scarce resources when building and damages to environment when disposing … LCA Hence models do exist with Proxies.Although resource scarcity may not be a direct concern for the CIO (inter)national authorities transform their concern regulations.?
  2. And more specifically the Need for Green Corporate governance of ITLet us zoom on EU’s situation
  3. On peutajouteràces aspects formalisésPolitical pressureUnited Nations, European Union, nationsNGO lobbyWWF, Greenpeace, ITU, WRIThink of Greenpeace campaign against Apple ! And apple (marketing) reaction. Although this might not be a primary concern for CIOs, Green-IT image and hype offers the possibility for the CIO to take driving seat in some of the image projectsOn voitqu’un certain nombre de standardsquel’onpeutvolontairementsuivre, prennent tout doucementunetournureobligatoire avec des contraintesfinancièresà la clef.Let us focus onto a very specfici and concrete case : UK
  4. Introduce a rk here on the Cloud aspect of the problem.
As a future manager and decision maker, be aware that impacts of those decisions are not limited to the scope of the financial statement.
  6. Re-inforcing again the need to orchestrate various profiles towards a single direction.GREEN-OF ITA few questions should be answered:What is priority for corporate ?Do I introduce new risks ?What are the side-effects ?Do I have enough maturity ?More?GREEN-BY ITSmart GridsSmart BuildingsSmart CitiesOptimizing transportationImproved Waste ManagementMore?
  7. Need for all actors of the IT storyFirst two questions also highlight the need for comparing “pure CO2” and other GHGs% IT energy consumption in the servicing industry : 50 à 70 %We won’t enter here into the various models to help create some common ground for such publications; just bear in mind that although measuring Scope is not that easy to determine; not to speak when part of the computing power is virtualized to the cloud.Si l’onveut comparer ifférents DCs, ilestévidentqel’on a besoin d’un standard;Si l’onveutvoir son propre DC (sapropreinformatique) évoluer, il “suffit” de bien fixer son propre scope et s’ytenir.Highlight the fact that the graphic demonstrat a number of direct actors the (only) the enrgy consumption issue : Procurement chooses the Energy providers, Facilities build DC, Infra chooses and manages Equipments,… developers optimize CPU usage for a certain work to be achived (efficiency) while Analysts and business help making things effective.
  8. Although focus is often set onto OpEx (here energy consumption), we see that the total impact on environment is far broader.Still, Usage is often made primary focus for two reasons:Can be solved by operational actionsDirectly linked to financial (non) waste’ve tried to give you some hint on what’s going on in a datacenter in terms of global warming (CO2 emissions) Let’s try to further open our minds and consider an extensive impact of a device onto environment.Other people (outside of IT are to be involved as well)Embrayericisur des réflexionsd’éco-système et donc de sustainability
  9. Just want to throw a few ideas on the subject because more and more hype(see even l’Echoendof august)
  10. Rappelerquel’on en a déjà touché un mot qd on a parlé de UK
  11. Cloud is certainly part of the solution; (it brings of course far more that green positive returns)Still it involves a lot of parties, has dramatic impact on human resources and must be considered as a strategic decision that must be fully prepared.
  12. And things are getting worse !!Opposite trends : need for IT to decrease its footprint … but the consumption for IT growth bigger and bigger.I hope I could convince you that IT IS a poluting industry;There is room for improvementThings can only get worse and worse with ever increasing demand for IT services.Besoin de R&DStdSkillsInteroperabilitéNetworkingCyberCrimemgt

  14. We’ve see the biggest challenge is to align all stakeholders in a single direction3 reasons:MarketingAccuracy of Assessment – because holistic topic requires global reachingPrepare ground for change management - & set up the right network of communication.Who’s responsible for what ?
  15. Some may argue the approach is too much mechanical; still, it is interesting to compare with Delphi-like
  16. COBIT highlightsRisk … in our development roadmap !!Interesting to note because nothing obvious has been stated at the business level would have been expected to lead to Risk … Still it is aligned with our own Roadmap (elaborated out of COBIT !!)COBIT missesStrategy AlignmentCapacity ManagementMapping Matrices shall be reviewed in the context of holistic initiatives like Green-IT(or in-accurate / un-precise business goals setting)
