Increase your Network The wider the Network the higher the likelihood of interacting with a potential client. Social Networking can help reach a circle of people that would otherwise not know about your product or service. Social Networks can almost act as a pyramid. For every customer or potential customer they may know two or three others that may be interested. in your products or service. Social Networks also allow connection to others that are in the same field. These individuals can help answer questions that are specific to your industry. Build Relationships Use Social Networks to build relationships. This will make your business more personable and trustworthy. Many Social Networking sites allow customers to interact with the business. Answering customer questions legitimizes your business by establishing your knowledge as being an expert in the field. Online Reputation It is extremely important to build an online reputation. By establishing an online reputation, additional online business ventures such as selling online or e-commerce will be significantly less difficult since the trust with your customer has already been established. Minimal Marketing Cost Social Networking is not a replacement for other forms of marketing, however is quickly becoming a vital component of a successful marketing campaign. Example: Ten to fifteen years ago, very few small and medium sized businesses had websites. In the last ten years, as the Internet and high speed Internet have become more accessible to individuals, many potential customers will look at a business’ website prior to dealing with the business. As potential customers connect to Social Networking sites, it becomes increasingly important for businesses to be on these Social Networking websites promoting themselves.
Social networking for business operation & for professionals LinkedIn is Social Networking for professionals that allows individuals to connect to potential employers and for employers to screen and view potential employees. In most cases, there are industry specific sections on LinkedIn. If there is not a industry specific section pertaining to your industry, LinkedIn allows for the creation of sections called Groups. More on Groups will be covered later. Puts small and big businesses on an equal playing field As more and more graduates are looking for work. Many companies that would otherwise be overlooked as potential employers are now able to advertise their company via LinkedIn. Social Networking websites are also a great help to companies that are located outside of major urban centres. Perhaps your company is near a town and a recent graduate is looking for a position that is near their hometown . Sole Proprietors In some cases a business maybe a sole proprietorship. Connecting with other individuals or small companies may help your own business grow, but also helps grow the entire industry.
Establish a personal profile Create an account and fill in information needed for creating a full profile. A full profile will help individuals find you and potentially your company. Stay in touch with colleagues and friends Find old classmates and colleagues in order to increase your Network. Ask them for recommendations in order to build a positive image online. Find experts and ideas Have a question? LinkedIn has various means for asking industry and topic specific questions such as joining Groups, asking questions in discussions and sending private messages. Connect with other people in your industry. Explore opportunities Find jobs, post employment, or general networking with other individuals.
What you need? LinkedIn is a website for individuals. In order to have a 100% complete profile on the website you will need the following: Photo A professional headshot would be ideal, however a photo that shows your entire face that is bright conveys professionalism. Executive Summary Typically a summary of your qualifications and skill set. Remember to sell yourself in the summary as many contacts will read this before viewing the rest of your profile. A well written summary is the difference between you and a competitor. Write personally about your career accomplishments, professional goals and try to use keywords relating to your field. Education History Include university or college experience as well as list any previous programs that you have participated in. This will help previous classmates and professors find you when they search LinkedIn. Experience or Employment history Provide a complete picture of your work history by adding the companies that you’ve worked for titles, and descriptions of your roles and responsibilities. Try to include at least three companies in your experience and employment history. Recommendations You can ask your contacts for recommendations. Think of these as testimonials for your profile.
*Walk students through sign up process. Be sure that all participants have appropriate information. Make note of any individuals that may not have all the appropriate information. *If there are any students without the appropriate information, while other participants are working on filling out information, have them create the information. *Once everyone has successfully created a LinkedIn account, have the participants sign into their accounts and wait at the main profile landing page.
Go to the top of the menu and find the Profile > Edit Profile link. *Allow students time to fill out information regarding Current and Past Experience.
*Have participants fill out formal education and relating company websites.
Connections are people that are in your specific field that you wish to connect to. You can use the search function to find the person you wish to become connected to. Another method to adding people you may know to you connections is by importing your contacts from your email address book. LinkedIn supports Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo, and AOL address books. To import your contacts go to the menu under Contacts > Import Contacts . Input your login information and LinkedIn will scan your contacts for those that are already on the LinkedIn Network and list them at the top of the window. Those that are not already on LinkedIn will show below. An option is to send your contacts invitations to join LinkedIn as well. Note – It is safe to import your contacts from your email. LinkedIn will not store your email login information.
Recommendations are endorsements that your contacts will make on your behalf. Very similar to providing references on a resume. To view or ask for recommendations use the menu item Profile > Recommendations. You will see a list of your current and previous positions that you may ask others for recommendations for. Choose Ask to be endorsed for whichever position you wish to request a recommendation for. Have participants choose a position that correlates to a contact that they have in their network. If none exist, have participants choose any position and walk through the steps of filling out the connection they wish to send a request to.
Your recommendation is also your reputation. By paying close attention to your language in your recommendation, you will reduce the likelihood of having your reputation tarnished if you give a recommendation that is incorrect. Be honest, do not make statements that are overly generous. One way of receiving recommendations from others is by giving them out first. Do not hesitate to recommend contacts in your Network.
Groups are a great way of networking with individuals from within your industry. You may access the group directory by going to the menu under Groups > Groups Directory. Use the keywords field to fill in a keyword relating to your industry. Browse through the results and request to join the group that is listed. When requesting to join a group, you may or may not wish to set the group logo on your own profile. Check the box if you wish to display the Group logo in your profile. Whenever an administrator wishes to contact you, you may choose which email you wish to be contacted through. You may choose to receive digests or summaries of Group activity. You may choose to receive Group announcements and allow other members to send you messages.
Once you have been accepted into the Group, improve your exposure by creating discussions. Creating discussions include asking a question or posting a link that could be of interest to group members. If you find a discussion of particular interest you can follow that discussion to make it easier to find later. Keep track of all your discussions by clicking on your own photo on the Groups Page. This will create a list of Discussions you have started, joined, and are following. You can also help a topic gain popularity by interacting with other users on the discussion. You can click on the ‘Like’ button or the ‘Comment’ button in order to make a topic more interesting and relevant to the Group.
Ask question : Create discussions or use the answers section under the More… menu and Answers. The more active you are within discussion groups, the more likely you are to make new connections. Explore opportunities : Look for job postings or post job postings. Use LinkedIn to scope out potential employees or potential employers. Use other Social Networks : Use other websites like Facebook, MySpace, and Twitter to develop a larger network.
Twitter is a blogging platform that allows users to send out mini posts to the Internet. Who has access to these posts? Anyone that is willing to look. However, once you gain followers your posts will be seen by anyone who follows you.
Full Name Use your full name to make it easier for people you know to find you. Username The username will be known as your Handle. Choose something unique and short since followers will have to remember what your Handle is to use in a Tweet. If a follower wishes to mention your username, having a username that is too long may be hard to remember. Try and pick a username that will stick in follower’s minds. Avoid using hyphens and underscores because the locations of these special characters may be hard to remember. Password Fill out password - use a good password to avoid your Twitter account being hacked. Fill out Email This email address will be used to retrieve account information in the case it is forgotten. Allowing others to find your account using the email address is entirely dependent on how you will use the Twitter account. If you are using your account to ask questions and follow other Twitter users, rather than promote your company, you may want to remove this choice.
Tweet A post that is created is called a Tweet. This is a message that has a 140 character limit and therefore users sometimes need to be creative when creating coherent messages. Handle A handle is your Twitter account name. It is used not only to login to your account, but for followers or people of interest to mention you in their Tweets. Follow The act of following on Twitter simply means that you will receive the Tweets of the users that you follow on your Home Page. When you Tweet, the users that follow you will see your Tweets on their home Pages. Reply Any Twitter user can mention your Handle in their Tweet using @your user name. You can reply to their Tweet by using the Reply button.
Retweet Retweeting is the simple act of sending a message that another user has created to your own followers. * Choose two participants and explain that both participant 1 and participant 2 are part of the same company. Participant 1 Tweets about a new product being launched to their Followers. Participant 2 who is following Participant 1 wants to publish the same message to their own followers, thus using the Retweet function to republish the message to their Followers. Also great for forwarding important links. Direct Messages (DM) Direct Messages are messages that are not viewable by the public. Great way to have a conversation with another user rather than bombarding Followers with messages that are only meant for just one person. Hashtag Hashtags are tags that help categorize your Tweet. Think of it as a subject line in an E-mail. When a user is looking for a particular e-mail, they will search their inbox based on the subject line. A Hashtag serves the exact same purpose. Use as many or as few Hashtags in Tweets to help new users find your Tweets.
Complete your profile There are plenty of spam accounts on Twitter that will automatically follow users hoping to receive follows in return. One indication of a spam account is the use of the default theme and default profile photo for your account. Find a photo that you can update as quickly as possible. Visit the Settings menu in the top right hand corner. You can set all of your information from the settings menu. Feel free to change the timezone as well as turn on the location of your Tweets and whether to protect your Tweets. Tweet locations could be dangerous for example if you have plenty of expensive equipment. Example: If you have expensive equipment at your worksite and you use your location and then Tweet that you are away from the office you may put yourself at risk for theft. Click on Settings > Profile This is where you can set up your photo. Fill out additional information that you wish to display to your followers such as the city that you are living in as well as a website. Click on Settings > Design Create a wallpaper or customize the colours of your Twitter layout. Search for users Click the Home button and along the sidebar you can choose to search for specific users, or search for topics. Begin following users that you already know of and then search by topic. Retweet Increase your activity by Retweeting messages from those that you follow. Staying active is what helps encourage others to follow your Tweets. At first it may be discouraging to Tweet to one or two Followers, but as you develop a solid Followers base, Tweeting will become easier and you will begin to see dialog occur between you and other users.
Rather than answering the question of ‘What are you doing?’ Try and answer ‘What has your attention.’ This will create more interesting Tweets rather than generic tasks that you are completing. Create multiple Twitter accounts per company Having a different voice for the same company personalizes the company. People also go on vacation, or leave companies. Create a diverse voice for your Twitter followers. Ask a Question Promote dialog by asking a question or asking opinions. Be modest Do not rant and rave about yourself too much, and if you do, rant and rave about others as well. Thank your Followers. If your Followers Retweet your message, thank them. Gratitude will get you everywhere. Also thank them for following you as well with a simple mention.
Search for a known user and follow From the Twitter home Page, search for a User by clicking on Find People . If you are searching for a celebrity there are many fake accounts. A legitimate Twitter account for a celebrity will usually read ‘Verified account.’ Search for a Hashtag Find topics by typing #subject matter. Example: #agriculture Tweet a message *Allow participants to send a message. Something along the lines of ‘Happy to be on Twitter, excited to see what’s out there.’ Or a brief introduction with a link to a website ‘Happy to be on Twitter, visit our website www.zephyrtraining.ca #training #yeg.’ Using the airport code of #yeg shows location as well as reduces number of characters used. Important since Tweets are limited to 140 characters. Retweet a message Retweet a message from someone you are following. Hover over the Tweet and in the bottom right corner you will see Reply and Retweet.
