2. Every magazine carries a conventional house style throughout it’s magazine issues. There are many reasons for doing
this, the main reason is so the magazine had more chance of been recognised for it’s style. Another reason for this
may be as it allows the magazine to carry a professional look and looking professional could lead to rise in
magazine sales.
What house style does Q carry?
When looking over the magazines I have reviewed, I have looked over many Q front covers, contents pages and
double page spreads and from these I have be able to pick up on some key points in Q’s house style and the
conventional way they are used in the magazines. A key house style feature that I have picked up through my
research is the masthead and the placement of the masthead. This is not just relevant for Q but in every
magazine. Q’s masthead is a simple red square with a white Q. And this masthead is always placed in the top left
hand corner. This is a conventional house style piece of a Q front cover. In a typical Q magazine there is a limited
number of colours used throughout, this is so the magazine is not to busy and has a professional style carried
throughout. The colours conventionally used in a issue of Q are red, white, black and occasionally grey/sliver and
blue. However when a issues is a special edition or has added pages of interviews in gold is used to show them
which I believe shows their value to the reader. Viewing and analysing Q front covers has aloud me to recognise a
key point about the cover shot of a Q front cover. This key point is that it is very popular for them to place the
cover shot in the centre and frame the image with key events the magazine contains. The artist/artists face is
always in the centre of the cover shot and if the image is covering a large percentage of the page the image
always falls to the right. Therefore it never falls to the left which is where the mast head is placed, which I believe
is so the masthead has no attention drawn away from it as this is the main way the magazine is recognised when
it is sold in a shop.
