The Chosen One
1) Choose 1 fundamental principle. What are the difficulties
faced when applying it in life and how can we overcome these
difficulties?
5. 17/08/2013 5
Impartiality is the act of not
making any discrimination
as to nationality, race,
religious beliefs, class or
political opinions.

7. Stereotypes
Now you might be wondering, what are
stereotypes? Stereotypes are beliefs or ideas of
what a particular type of person/thing are like.
17/08/2013 7
Most of the time, they are unfair or untrue.
Radio, television, music, the internet and books.
These are all ways stereotypes can be spread. It
can be either in the form of a hidden message or
an obvious one.
8. How to overcome: Stereotypes
17/08/2013 8
To overcome stereotypes, it is actually the
simplest amongst the three. Don’t listen to the
stereotypes that influence you in this manner.
For example, if a piece of music is about how it
is good to be racist, don’t believe or do what it
is saying. Better still, don’t listen to it at all. This
way, you will not have any chance of being
influenced by the bad things in the piece of
music.
9. Unfamiliarity
Probably the most common cause of prejudice
or partiality, unfamiliarity means not to be
familiar with something.

10. How to overcome: Unfamiliarity
Simple too. Get familiar with it. Research about
it, ask those who know about it. Be it a religion,
race or whatsoever, it needs respect. For
example, if you do not know that a certain race
has a certain culture, and you unknowingly
insult them, it wouldn’t be very nice would it?

11. Selfishness
Selfishness. Caring only about
your own at the expense of
others. Selfishness is also
another problem that you
may face when trying to apply
impartiality to life.
Sometimes, you get angry at
someone else and you are not
happy, so you decide to
criticize them and
differentiate them by race,
religion or even class.

12. How to overcome: Selfishness
Don’t be selfish. As simple as that. Ever heard
the phrase “Humans are selfish creatures”?
Humans were born selfish, it’s whether you can
change or not. So simply, consider others when
doing something. Put others before yourself.
Show your care for others. Be selfless.

Notas do Editor
Impartiality is the second Red Cross fundamental principles. Remember HINIVUU?
It makes no discrimination as to nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political opinions. It endeavours to relieve the suffering of individuals, being guided solely by their needs, and to give priority to the most urgent cases of distress. An Inspector Calls – J.B. Priestley

When a person, especially one that is very young, is exposed to stereotypes of a specific group for the first time, then that person will assume all are that way. Likewise, when a source is constantly displaying negative things about a particular race, then that will affect the overall opinions as well.

Unfamiliarity with a certain race, and you here only negative stereotypes of them, you would also think that the race is not a good race, which might end up of you being partial towards the race.
