Ofcom has approved Kerrang!’s application to change the format of its
breakfast show to include less speech. The West Midlands station, which
launched in June 2004, can now replace five minutes of speech with music,
reducing the speech content from three-quarters to two-thirds of output
between 0600 and 0900. In its licence application, Kerrang! brand owner
EMAP’s research found that many potential listeners considered heavy rock
too noisy in the morning. Instead it proposed a “distinctive” speech-heavy
breakfast show hosted by popular 'Kiss FM' breakfast DJ Bam Bam, perhaps
hoping to achieve the popularity of Howard Stern’s former syndicated morning
rock show in the USA. Since winning the licence, however, Bam Bam has
remained at Kiss FM and Sony Award winning Australian DJ Ugly Phil has
presented the Kerrang! breakfast show. 'Ugly' Phil O’Neill once had the honour
of being mentioned in the New South Wales parliament, when an MP accused
him of imitating Howard Stern by “using smut to attract young people” to listen
to Sydney station 'The Fox'. This was before he moved to the UK and worked
for Kiss FM.
