The challenge of the Personal
   Learning Environment

The industrial revolution of the 19th Century led to an
industrial model of schooling - training a mass work
force for a production line economy
and institutional pedagogic approaches




            reflected the idea of ‘currere’
curriculum - a race

winners, losers
same starting
point
same finish point
a straight line
who is fastest
rule bound
timekeeping, obedience, neatness,
  tidiness, cleanliness and…….
HOMOGENEITY
Virtual Learning Environments
have been based on traditional
educational models
for managing learners
The push delivery
of curriculum and learning materials
in walled gardens
owned by the institution
with hierarchical privileges
This model is now being
      challenged
personalisation
  of learning
new demand for
   education
new sources and
contexts of learning
the changing ways in
which people are using
      computers
developing personal
 learning networks
participating in
communities of
   practice
appropriating technologies
for learning
using multiple devices
learning

through

practice

Shaping
  digital
identities
in other words developing
their own Personal Learning
       Environments
The challenge to
institutions is to engage
with the new possibilities
      the PLE offers
