It is an event that promotes cultural awareness and the continued improvement of inter-group relations by sharing the diverse Asian culture with the metro-Atlanta community. The Rice Festival invites nonprofit organizations, community service organizations, local businesses, and corporate sponsors to contribute their products and services. This is an effort to share with the community the vast resources that are available and to create a network for future reference. Performers representing all the different Asian countries are invited to share their heritage and customs, as well as artists sharing a variety of crafts and artwork.
Why is the Rice Festival important?
The Rice Festival is important because it gathers funds that can be used for all the programs that AARC provides to the metro-Atlanta community. These services are not limited to the Asian community and promoting them through the Rice Festival allows AARC to share its resources with a larger population. The festival is also a great opportunity for local organizations and businesses to come and share their resources and increase their customer base. With the Asian population continuing to grow, the need for social and financial assistance grows as well. There are over 200,000 Asian Americans and 6,000 Pacific Islanders in the Atlanta MSA (Metropolitan Statistical Area) according to 2004 Census Bureau estimates. In Gwinnett County, the Asian-American population grew 355% from 1990 to 2000. Asian Indians are the largest group, making up about 27% of the Asian-American population. Pacific Islanders have the second highest poverty rate with 17% while Asian-Americans are at 10%. Nine AAPI (Asian-American/Pacific Islander) groups have poverty rates above average, including Koreans, Chinese, and Vietnamese. Many AAPIs have higher than average rates of living in overcrowded housing. AARC's mission is to improve the quality of life for the Asian-American population, increase cultural awareness, and encourage communication within the diverse Atlanta community.
** We are still looking for organizations, businesses, and food vendors to join the Rice Festival as a booth holder. Please contact the AARC if you are interested in participating in this great event. http://www.aarc-atlanta.org/cultural1.php
When: October 2010 (dates not posted on website)
Asian American Resource Center2855 Rolling Pin Lane, Suwanee, GA 30024 PHONE 770-270-0663 FAX 770-270-0979Email aarc@aarc-atlanta.org
Woodstock Music Festival
October 2nd 12:00 pm until 10:00 pm
This new all day music festival celebrates the local talent of the area!
