2. Type of Documentary
• The Devil Made Me Do It is mixed-
because it has a variety of everything, it
has interviews, It has narration – off
screen voice over, it has observation,
editing and self reflective.
• There are interviews with the ‘devil’.
• Interviews with family members.
• Voice over for most of the documentary.
• English voice over when interviews with
native speakers.
• Off screen voice over of the girls
statements.
• Self- reflective when the ‘devil’ talks.
• Live footage from his concerts.
3. Themes
• Satin
• good vs Evil
• God vs Devil
• Murder
• Religion
• Music Industry
• Parental Control
4. Narrative Structure
The way the information is given to us. It has
elements of a complex narrative, but mainly a
circler narrative because it starts and ends with
the same story and during it goes back in
history. This means as the audience we are told
about the nun dying, but then are taken back in
time to why and how this came to happen and
then it brings us back to the nun dying, by
showing the nuns funeral.
5. • Rule of 3rd shot when interviewing
the ‘devil’.
• Hand held camera for live footage
from his concerts.
• Publicity by the media.
• The camera follows Marilyn Manson
around all over the place.
Camerawork
6. Mis-en-scene
• Low key light (backstage gigs)
• Crosses
• Bibles
• Religious
• Dark colour makeup around the eyes
and lips and completely pale white face
• Crazy black hair
• Black clothing
7. • Music (Marilyn Manson)
• Live audio
• Screaming fans
• Emotive music
• Parallel Sound
Sound
8. Editing
• Pace, this is the fast or slow way editors
edit footage together, so it might be fast
pace of editing for the live footage of a
concert but slow for an interview
• Cut transition is where the editor decides
to cut the take of footage and place
another piece in.
• Cut away (A Roll, B Roll) is where the
editor cuts away from one thing to
something completely different or is in
relation to what someone has just said in
the footage beforehand, eg if Marilyn
Manson was in an interview and made a
point of saying he loves his fans, the editor
may decide to cut to a photo or a live
footage of the fans and then back to the
interview.
9. Archive Material
• This means it has already been filmed
and the editors have chosen to use it.
Concert footage, would have been
recorded when he was in Rome
dressing up as the pope.
• Detective work when the trial was
going on someone would have
videoed the police.
• The nun’s funeral would have been
recorded when it happened.
11. Other notes I have made
• Apparently the village is boring for teens so they
feel they have to scare people
• The girls self-harmed before the murder
• The girls looked ‘normal’
• Marilyn Manson blamed the teenager’s parents
and claimed to be a better parent than them as he
apparently listens to the fans problems and tries
to help them.
• This is not the first time Marilyn Manson has been
the problem for some action taken place by
teenagers.
