ability and prior experience
This is a map made by
Y4 children after a walk
in the local area.
The children confident
users of the internet
and are able to locate
maps using a range of
IT programs. These are
Y3’s locating maps to
use as part of a power

6. Y1’s trip to the local playground
and Y3’s trip to Yarm
1c: Fieldwork, active enquiry learning and the use of ICT has a clear impact on the way children learn geography
The children have enjoyed
exploring their own locality and
the nearby historic town of
Yarm.
7. Carlton field trip Y5
1c: Fieldwork, active enquiry learning and the use of ICT has a
clear impact on the way children learn geography
The Y5 children visited a small
village in the North Yorkshire
Moors as their contrasting
locality. They compared
physical and human features
with Ingleby Barwick and
looked at the reasons why it
was built where it is – they
discovered a link to local
history and alum mining. They
also plotted their route to
Carlton before the trip.

10. Local Environment / Windmill Park
1d: Geography is seen as a key subject to engage creative and critical
thinking about ‘people and places’, local and global changes and
possible futures.
The School Council and children
across all year groups have
been involved in the design of a
new playground which will be
situated close to the school.
Children in the School Council
are here seen discussing the
project with the project engineer
from Stockton Borough Council.
Artist Gilmar Ribeiro is seen
working with the children on their
designs for the local park.
Construction is now underway
and the children will be able to
see their plans take shape with
benefit for all of the local children
in the community.
11. Eco - Project – ‘Growing Spaces’
1d: Geography is seen as a key subject to engage creative and critical thinking about ‘people and places’, local and global changes and possible futures.
The children have worked hard to improve their awareness of ecological
concerns and have worked together to improve our school grounds.
12. Eco – Awareness / CO2 Reduction work at school
1d: Geography is seen as a key subject to engage creative and critical
thinking about ‘people and places’, local and global changes and
possible futures.
The school has provided the
children with many opportunities
to engage in eco-friendly
activities which encourage an
awareness of their locality and
the need to develop more
sustainable methods of travelling
to and from school.
The school is a ‘WOW’ school
and a ‘Bike It’ School and
recently took part in the national
‘Big Pedal’ event to encourage
children to cycle to school.
13. Links with China 2010 -11
1d: Geography is seen as a key subject to engage creative and critical thinking
about ‘people and places’, local and global changes and possible futures.
During the past academic year
the school has developed links
with a school in Baoding
Province.
The Head teacher and two of our
staff have visited the school and
there are already good links
developing between our school
and this very large school just
outside of Beijing.
The opportunities for our children
to get involved and to learn more
about China have clearly been
increased and we have had a
China focus across all year
groups this year.
14. Y5 and Y6 ‘China Day’
Children had the opportunity to learn about different aspects of life in China.
1d: Geography is seen as a key subject to engage creative and critical thinking about ‘people and places’, local and global changes and possible futures.
15. Orienteering
1e Core geographical knowledge underpins children’s
learning about the world
As part of ‘Geography
Week’ all children had the
opportunity to ‘have a go’ at
orienteering. The younger
children used plans
detailing a route to follow
using coloured cones, and
the older children used
detailed surveyed maps of
the playground to locate
different points. Great fun
was had by all!
16. Finding Barnaby Bear
1e Core geographical knowledge underpins children’s learning about the world
As part of their map
work the children in
Year 1 were given the
challenge to find
Barnaby Bear who
was hidden around the
school. They not only
had to locate him but
had to show his
position on a basic
map of the school.
