OUTSTANDING GEOGRAPHY STUDENT AWARD
ESSAY QUESTIONS 2013-14
Students are to answer one of the following questions in order to enter the competition (approx.
800-1000 words). In addition, in no more than 200 words, students are to explain why they should
win the award, how they will benefit from the experience and how they will use geography in their

QUESTION 1:
Assess the impact of volcanic activity, such as the recent eruption of Eyjafjallajokull (2010), on tourism in
Iceland.
QUESTION 2:
Does the scientific monitoring of volcanoes, such as Eyjafjallajokull, significantly reduce their threat to
people?
QUESTION 3:
Assess the relative importance of natural processes in the development of glacial landforms, such as those
associated with Solheimajokull glacier.
QUESTION 4:
Assess the advantages and disadvantages of developing Solheimajokull as a large-scale tourist attraction.
QUESTION 5:
How can Hardanger fjord be developed as a centre for sustainable tourism?
QUESTION 6:
To what extent do the advantages of tourism in Hardanger fjord outweigh the disadvantages?
